Healthy Savory Ingredients Better than Salt

Healthy Savory Ingredients Better than Salt

If you want to be healthier, then read on to learn about healthy savory ingredients which are far better than salt for your health.

Salt is a wonderful ingredient that brings dishes alive.

Yet like sugar, too much salt is pretty bad for you and can increase blood pressure.

So, if you are looking for healthy savory ingredients that do the same job, here are a few suggestions you can try when cooking your favorite meals.

I’m sharing this info because I am bestselling wellness author.

I founded a nutritionist recommended online program called…

I love recommending insights and good health habits to help people to enjoy their healthiest life.

So I created this article sharing a range of healthy savory ingredients that are better than salt.

Pungent Tea Leaves and Grounds

You may not think it, but some of the best and most flavorsome teas are used for more than just drinking. Some of the tasty teas from around the world can be used in the same way as herbs. And you can use some, like the best tasting Rooibos teas, as a savory alternative to salt. Other savory teas you can use to flavor food include earthy teas like black tea for smoking fish and meat. Or you can simply add some leaves or a tea bag into soups and stews for a smooth taste.

Healthy Savory Ingredients include MSG

Monosodium Glutamate, or MSG, is controversial because there are some claims that it causes brain disorders in large doses. However, you may not be aware that most of these claims come from spurious social media channels and are unfounded. You can use your own judgment, and more research is needed. However, MSG is undoubtedly a great alternative to salt as it dies the same job with less sodium. Which is why pretty much every restaurant you visit uses it.

Light Soy Sauce

If you are unsure about using MSG, then you can consider using soy sauce. But make sure you use light soy sauce since it is the lighter version that contains the MSG and sodium content that brings a dish to life. Dark soy sauce is generally used for coloring. The reason why light soy sauce is so delicious is that it contains the umami flavoring key to many dishes in Asian cuisine. If you don’t want to add this, try adding mushrooms or tomatoes to your dish for natural umami.

Herbs and Spice Blends

If you have a good selection of healthy herbs and spices to hand, you may not even need salt at all. You need to experiment to find what you like. But here are some good blends you can try:

  • Try blending different dried chilies, such as Bird’s Eye, with paprika and oregano.
  • Classic herbs like rosemary and thyme and amazing dark meats like a lamb roast.
  • You can make marinades from strong herbs like basil when mixed with olive oil.
  • Middle Eastern spices like cumin add a depth of flavor and natural saltiness.
  • Chives offer a fresh and subtle flavor similar to onion and garlic blends.

You could probably fill a book on the various herb and spice blends you can use to increase saltiness. But the best way to find what you want is to cook more to find out what you like.

Salty Canned Anchovies

Most people are repulsed by this one. But anchovies are an excellent restaurant seasoning secret. You have probably eaten anchovy-seasoned dishes and have not even known it. This is because when you layer or Kix anchovies into a hot dish and cook it for a certain amount of time, they melt away. But although the fish texture has disappeared, anchovies leave behind a wonderfully salty taste. They work particularly well for meaty dishes like lamb and beef roasts.

Use Alliums as Healthy Savory Ingredients

Alliums are wonderful plants whose roots include special ingredients such as garlic, onions, and shallots. They also include leeks, chives, and scallions. If you have ever cooked anything fresh, then you know how great these are as ingredients in almost any dish. But they also offer natural sodium levels that can replace or reduce salt levels. A good trick is to layer your alliums. For example, start a dish for flavor with onion and garlic. Then garnish with chives or scallions.

Tangy Citrus Fruits

The sour and tangy flavor of citrus fruits makes them an excellent alternative to salt. Plus, you include a lot of vitamin C in your dish if you use citrus. You can cook meats such as chicken with lemons and limes, which also make excellent garnishes for seafood. But one of the most delicious ways to use citrus fruits for masses of flavor is with sweet and sticky sauces. There’s nothing quite like fresh chicken kebabs from the BBQ drizzled with a tangy lemon sauce.

Summary

You might be using too much salt in your food, which can also increase the chances of severe medical issues like high blood pressure. Fortunately, there are many healthy, savory ingredients you can use instead, such as tea leaves, herbs and spice blends, and citrus fruits like lemon.
