One of the most important ways to achieve success in business, and arguably life, is to make connections with people. Whether it’s through networking deliberately or more natural connections, this is the best way to get ahead and give yourself an advantage.
While business is competitive by its nature, it can be a corroborative affair as well. So, here are a few tips to help you make connections with different people in the business world.
Vendors
One group of people who your business should work well with is vendors and suppliers. Whether you work in a service based industry or manufacture a product, good vendor relationships can save you a lot of time and money.
You might be able to get better deals on certain products, or even get exclusive or first choice in some cases, giving you an immediate advantage.
So, play nice with vendors to keep those relationships strong. Use corporate hampers to introduce yourself and show appreciation for certain deals and favors. Remember that a business is made up of the people behind it.
Networking
It can also be helpful to connect with other businesses in your industry and similar industries. These don’t necessarily have to be your competitors.
In some cases, businesses in similar industries can work together to provide a better service to customers and get more business. This can be as simple as having business cards in your place of business, or working directly with these other companies in certain products.
For example, the wedding industry can include a lot of different niches. A florist might be able to work alongside a wedding planner to get more customers in return for better prices. Both parties will benefit from this, as well as the customer.
Employees
If you hire employees, it stands to reason that better relationships mean a better workflow. If morale is high, people will work more efficiently and productively. They are also less likely to leave your company for greener pastures.
Create an atmosphere of trust and respect. Be open with your employees with things like benefits, pay slips, holidays, sick leave, and even potential issues that your company might be going through.
Customers and Clients
Arguably one of the most important relationships to consider is that between the company and the customer. People buy from people, so building a strong customer relationship means brushing up on your sales skills.
You can connect with your customers by using marketing methods like social media and even speak to them directly. Ask about their concerns and how to improve your service. People appreciate feeling listened to and they appreciate a better service even more.
When trying to sell a product or service, try to sell the improvement that it will make in your customers’ life. Help them to visualize using it. Even for a short time, be their friend and help them to find a product that they will love. This will make the sale and a repeat customer more likely.
