Reasons You Should Choose to UpskillIf you’ve been working in your job long enough, you’ll be very familiar with the statement that experience required is cited on most job selection criteria. Experience is never ending the pursuit, but it comes with a catch.

If you’re looking for a job with a new industry, you often need experience in that industry to get a job. But to gain the experience, you need to have a job. So it’s the ultimate catch 22.

Trying to get the right experience is not easy, but you can choose to upskill and recertify it and do new things. You need to be able to add onto your existing skills so that you will remain up to date in the ever changing world of work.

Whether you go back to college to study something new or you choose to go for your masters, you need to think about how you can upskill and ultimately why.

When it comes to the why behind upskilling, here are five persuasive reasons you should choose to upskill what you know and do.

1. More opportunities.

The biggest no-brainer of choosing to upskill is that you have access to more opportunities when you do it. Whether it’s a new job or a whole career change, upskilling is going to give you what you need to accumulate the skills needed to get you there. If you demonstrate that you have the relevant training, potential employers are more likely to consider you over those with skills gaps. You have to be clever with your upskilling too so that you will have access to mentors and resources that can help you to reach your ultimate career goals.

2. Advance Your Role.

Learn to excel in your role. If we were shown anything with COVID, it’s that nothing is 100% certain, including the role you’re working right now. Upscaling gives you a chance to segue into new careers, new industries, and new jobs that are more Evergreen. You need to be able to future proof your career and upskilling can help you to do that, especially if you can excel in your current position and thrive.

3. Learn something new.

The quest to learn is something that’s noble, and it gives you a chance to discover new passions. There are so many reasons why upskilling and gaining new knowledge can be of benefit to you, and it opens up so many doors to figure out new hobbies and talents, and even exciting passions that you may not have known were buried in there. You may develop a real interest in something you wouldn’t have considered before and that can lead you on a road to new discoveries.

4. You could get a promotion.

When you choose to upskill, you become far more valuable in the role that you’re in. If you’ve been hankering after a promotion, now is the time to get it. Upskilling is one of the best things that you can do to move your career more forward. So look at your current skills, match them to the opportunities you want to explore.

5. Improve yourself.

Sometimes it’s just a pat on the back that you need to improve your own self esteem. Upskilling gives you that self development push that you need.
