As you might know, I’m a bestselling author, award winning designer and happiness researcher. I wrote a book called Happy Habits.
In my research, I learned a lot about how to make sure you develop positive habits which lead to your best life – by embracing specific principles of “habit formation.”
In this article I will be sharing tips on removing bad habits and cultivating a healthy lifestyle.
Tips on how to end bad habits
As you can see, it is challenging to break bad habits. This is because the brain changes in response to specific triggers around us or substances that we ingest into our bodies. However, there are ways to help diminish these harmful effects!
The first thing one should do when trying to remove a habit from their life is to identify what causes them to engage in said action. Then you gotta find alternate methods of coping with those feelings instead, like quitting drinking alcohol. Hopefully it’s not driven you to the point where you need a DUI Attorney. Be open about your goal with friends and family so they can support you during this time, and see other things for yourself that make up for whatever behavior you’re removing from your daily routine (i.e., exercising).
Why exercise can be beneficial in helping remove bad habits
Something often overlooked when trying to break a habit is the role exercise can play. Exercise releases endorphins, which are hormones that make you happy. When you’re feeling down or struggling with cravings, exercising can help get those feel-good vibes going and make it easier to resist temptation.
Not only does working out have all of these benefits for your mood, but it’s also great for your physical health! Regular exercise has been shown to improve mental health conditions such as anxiety and depression, increase lifespan, and prevent chronic diseases from developing later in life.
It’s essential to maintain a healthy diet.
Along with exercise, it’s essential to have a healthy diet. Eating nutritious foods will give your body the energy it needs to help you resist cravings and make good decisions. Make sure you’re eating plenty of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean protein.
Avoid stress eating on processed foods, sugary drinks, and excessive amounts of saturated and unhealthy fats. If you’re not sure where to start when creating a healthy diet for yourself, consult with a nutritionist or do some research online. There are many resources available that can help get you on the right track!
Exercise your mind with meditation
One last thing you can do to help cultivate a healthy lifestyle is exercise your mind. Developing good habits and removing bad ones takes time. It helps to have things in place that will keep your mind from wandering off into negative territory. Mental exercises such as meditation or engaging yourself with activities like reading are great ways of supporting those harmful thoughts at bay!
Meditation allows you to focus on the present moment while releasing any negativity that might be bubbling up inside of you.
Reading stimulates the brain, helps improve language skills, and aids in memory retention. In fact, reading books is something essential for anyone who wants to remember their goal for improving themselves long-term.
Practice healthy sleeping routines
Last but not least, make sure you’re getting enough sleep! Most people need around eight hours of slumber per night to feel their best. Skimping on sleep can lead to all sorts of problems such as impaired judgment, decreased productivity, and even weight gain. Establish a regular bedtime for yourself and stick to it as closely as possible. Avoid using electronics screens right before bedtime and create an environment conducive to relaxation. Consider using calming essential oils or listening to soft music before drifting off into dreamland.
There are many ways to help cultivate a healthy lifestyle. However, identifying what causes you to engage in self-destructive behaviors is the first step, and figuring out how to cope with those feelings instead can make all of the difference!
