If you want to stay young and healthy, no matter your age or stage, you’ll love these key anti-aging skin tips.
Aging can be exciting and equally scary, considering the changes your body goes through.
Your skin can age because of things in your control – and other things beyond your control.
Basically, some aging is gonna happen, whether you like it or not.
For example, to a certain degree, no matter what you do, your skin will become a little bit drier and thinner. The human genes control these changes. This is called intrinsic aging.
However, there is another kind of aging you can experience, influenced by your lifestyle choices and environment. This is called extrinsic aging.
Happily, you can take preventive measures to slow down the effects of extrinsic aging on your skin.
As you might know, I wrote a best-selling, health-boosting wellness book, Life is Long.
Inside my book I share a range of health-boosting tips to slow down the aging process – and live longer, healthier, younger, more energetically. My book shares anti-aging tips for both the body and the mind. But in this article I’m going to focus simply on sharing anti-aging tips for your skin.
Anti-aging Skin Tips
If you want to slow down the aging process on your skin, keep in mind the following anti-aging skin tips.
1. Practice Healthy Living
Incorporating fresh fruits and green leafy veggies into your diet is a win for your skin. A good diet should include antioxidants, omega three fats and fibre in addition to veggies and fruits. What works for weight loss also works to slow down the aging process. Avoid refined carbs and lots of sugar as they can accelerate aging.
Also, ensure you drink a lot of water. Your skin will love it. Find printed drink bottles to carry your water in to ensure you remain hydrated all day long.
It is also vital to incorporate a regular exercise routine into your schedule. Exercising improves blood circulation, ensuring every part of your body receives optimum blood flow. This gives your skin a youthful appearance.
2. Use Sunscreen
The sun is a significant contributor to the damage to your skin. It is vital to protect your skin from the sun daily by using sunscreen, sun-protective clothing, a hat with a wide brim, or UV protection sunglasses. You should apply sunscreen to every part of your body that’s not covered by clothing.
When choosing a sunscreen, it’s essential to look for one that offers broad-spectrum protection against UVA and UVB rays. Use sunscreen of least SPF 30; it protects you against 97% of the sun’s UVB rays. If you have fair skin or have a history of skin cancer, you may want to use sunscreen with an SPF of at least 50.
One of the most evident effects of sun damage is hyperpigmentation. When you’re overexposed to sunlight, this triggers the overproduction of melanin in your skin, causing those dark spots. The discoloration may also be brought about by factors such as aging. However, fret not, as with the right hyperpigmentation skin care, you can significantly even out your skin tone and make yourself look younger.
3. Use a Self-tanner
With each tan you get, you cause your skin to age prematurely regardless of the method you use to get the tan. It could be from a tanning bed, the sun or other indoor tanning equipment. All these avenues emit UV rays that accelerate the aging of your skin. Use a self-tanner instead.
It’s a product that allows you to get a tan without UV exposure. It comes in various forms, such as lotions, sprays, and mousses, and works by temporarily staining the top layer of your skin with a color that mimics a tan.
It’d be best to use a gentle exfoliant or body scrub to buff away dead skin before self-tanning for an even result. Also, it’s always better to build up your tan gradually instead of applying too much in one go. For best results and to maintain your tan longer, use a lotion or moisturizer.
4. Avoid Addictive Substance Use
Alcohol dehydrates your skin, and this will, in time, damage the skin, making you look older. Also, avoid smoking as it accelerates aging. It causes wrinkles and darkens your complexion.
5. Observe a Facial Routine
It is essential to cleanse your skin gently because scrubbing can irritate it and, in turn, accelerate aging. Gently wash your face to remove makeup and other elements your skin has been exposed to, like dust.
Wash your face twice every day and also after heavy sweating. Sweat can irritate the skin, and it’s, therefore, essential to wash it off immediately.
Ensure you moisturize your face every day to help with your skin’s water retention ability, leaving your skin looking more youthful.
Choose your facial products wisely. Avoid using any products that cause a burning sensation on your face. Any product that irritates your skin causes premature aging. You should discontinue the use of such products immediately.
Conclusion on Anti-Aging Skin Tips
It is possible to reverse extrinsic aging by making some lifestyle changes. However, you will require strong willpower and discipline to stop some bad habits like emotional eating and substance abuse. Do a cost-benefit analysis to help you figure out your next moves into achieving that youthful look.
