Causes of Severe Stomach Cramps: Signs, Symptoms, Relief Tips

What Causes Severe Stomach Cramps? Signs, Symptoms, and Relief TipsThe first time I got horrible cramps in my stomach is still engraved on my memory. One fine day—I went back home from work, having my evening tea, when all of a sudden a severe pain struck all around my abdomen.

I thought it might simply be indigestion — but within minutes, the cramping became so painful I was forced to sit down whilst crunching my stomach as tight as possible.

It felt like a hot, knotted twist so that I could hardly do anything except concentrate on it. That was a time I understood the debilitating power of stomach cramps.

Common causes of the severe stomach cramps

They may be due to a minor digestive problem, or a more serious condition. Following are some of the most common ones:

1. Indigestion and Gas

Indigestion can also be a result of eating too much, fast, spicy and oily food. This typically leads to distension and cramping.

2. Menstrual Cramps

Menstrual cramps are a monthly torment for many women. When the uterus sheds its lining, it contracts, and this can cause any degree of discomfort from mild to very severe.

3. Food Poisoning

Eating contaminated food can lead to food poisoning accompanied by severe cramps, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. The painful stomach contractions you feel are actually your body trying to get rid of the harmful bacteria.

4. Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a long-term condition that causes cramping, bloating, diarrhea or constipation. Certain factors such as stress and certain foods trigger or worsen the symptoms.

5. Gastritis and Ulcers

Burning pain in the abdomen can be from inflammation of the stomach lining (gastritis) or peptic ulcers.

6. Appendicitis

If you have sudden, sharp pain in the lower right abdomen. It can cause serious complications that require emergency surgery if it is ignored.

There was one specific stage when the cramps in my stomach became so difficult to endure, I had no choice but to go to my physician. He recommended drotin ds tablet, a medication often prescribed for smooth muscle spasm & abdominal cramps. Drotin DS Tablet uses include relief from menstrual cramps, renal colic, and other muscle spasms. It was excellent in relieving my pain and letting me proceed with my day.

Some Important Signs and Symptoms

Stomach cramps can come with a shuffling experience. Mild cramps are not alarming, but if there is severe and constant pain, it indicates that there is a problem. Some symptoms to be aware of include:

  • Sharp or stabbing pain in the belly
  • Bloating and gas
  • A change in bowel habits, such as diarrhea or constipation
  • Nausea and vomiting

Go to the doctor if the pain is constant, or if you have more symptoms, such as a lot of fever, vomiting blood, or black stools.

3 Ways to Relieve Stomach Cramps

While experiencing stomach cramps is tiring, there are numerous home remedies, and treatments to help relieve the cramps.

1. Apply Heat

Applying heat to the abdomen with a heating pad or warm compress may relax the muscles and relieve the pain of cramping. It especially helps with menstrual cramps.

2. Stay Hydrated

Stomach cramps and pain can be made worse by dehydration, which is common with diarrhea or vomiting. Sipping on lots of water, herbal teas or drinks high in electrolytes are likely to calm this irritation in your gut.

3. Try Gentle Massage

Circular motion massage on abdomen is helpful in relaxing and supports digestion. You can add essential oils like peppermint or ginger oil to intensify the calming effect.

4. Eat Light and Bland Foods

Shun spicy, oily, or dairy-rich food products. Instead, stick to bananas, rice, toast, and applesauce as these are easier to digest. These might soothe your stomach.

5. Even Over-the-counter medicines

In case of extreme cramp severity, one can take antacids for indigestion, probiotics for gut health, or pain relievers like drotaverine, which will serve as a rapid pain relief provider. Always consult your doctor before taking any medicine.

When to Get Medical Help

Most of the time, however, stomach cramps pass without any treatment, although there are times when medical help is needed. Visit a doctor if:

  • The pain is intense and relentless
  • You develop a high fever; vomit, or become dehydrated
  • Blood in stool or vomit
