“Are you ever going to be happy?”

This was the question my husband asked me in the midst of a dark and challenging period of my life. He was right to ask. Someone had to find a way to save me from myself and my unchecked myriad of unhealthy thoughts.

Sometimes, we get lost in our thoughts and lose track of the fact that we are attracting the opposite of happiness. And, in fact, we’re magnetizing our fears and frustrations instead.

Can you relate? Have you ever found yourself in your own world of thoughts that are either unhealthy, unkind or unproductive?

Examples of Unhealthy Thoughts

  • If only I had… then I could…
  • I can’t… I never… I am too tired, busy, stressed…
  • Why do I always… fail, mess up, overdo it…
  • This happened because… of someone else, something else…

When you examine the above – you’ll notice that these are excuses – where we are blaming external conditions and other people.

But here’s the thing…

We Are Wired to Be Happy!

It’s true! So when we feel anything other than happy, our internal guidance lets us know that something is not right. As soon as we start to go down the rabbit hole of negative thoughts, feelings and emotions, our emotional guidance system kicks in. And it lets us know that we are heading in the wrong direction!

And what is it that leads in the wrong direction?

There is one thing and one thing only… OUR THOUGHTS!

We are always being prompted to redirect our thinking and find a way to return to our path of happiness.

Here is A Favorite Trick to Attract More Happiness

I tell myself…

  • “When you feel yucky, you are really quite lucky.”

It’s simply that simple!

As soon as you become aware that you are feeling yucky, stop and recognize that you are lucky. You can feel gratitude for the fact that your emotional guidance system is working well. And that you are being guided, supported, and loved. After all, inside you there is a higher power reminding you that you are wired for happiness. And this inner power is always trying to give you a loving nudge to examine your thoughts – so you can find ways to think differently about your circumstance or situation.

With all this in mind…

Mindful Ways to Attract More Happiness1. Pay attention to how you are feeling.

Be aware of your emotional state at all times. Notice when you are feeling stressed, sad, frustrated or anything else that indicates some level of “yuckiness.” Notice when you are feeling excitement, joy, freedom, gratitude or anything that indicates you are in your happy zone. As you pay more attention to how you are feeling, you will be able to work toward shifting to better feelings and healthier thoughts.

2. Think about your thoughts like seeds.

When it comes to shifting and improving your thoughts, try to think of your thoughts like seeds. For example, when you plant corn, a corn stalk grows. And an acorn becomes an oak tree. So, when you are thinking thoughts that are fear-based, you are cultivating more fear. When you are thinking joyful thoughts, you are fostering joy in your experiences.

3. Imagine that your mind is a garden.

The garden of your mind can be cared for in a manner similar to a real garden. If your thoughts are the seeds, you should not only pay attention to what you are planting. You should also fertilize those thoughts that make you feel happy. And weed out thoughts that pull you away from feeling good.

4. Look for reasons to be happy.

Look for the best in every situation. Take time to consider possible perspectives until you find one that adds value to the moment and offers you the best outcome. Pause long enough to deliberately choose a perspective – rather than mindlessly accepting your immediate impulse. You should make sure you’re always finding ways to see things differently and better. Especially when situations are not within your control. This will help protect your happiness. And it will help avoid unnecessary suffering.

5. Make peace with this moment.

Most of your trouble begins when you want to be “anywhere but here.” When you are worried about the future, stuck in the past or resisting something in the present moment. When I realize that I am resisting something in my life, I  imagine myself dancing in quicksand. Why?  Because trying harder, in this case, causes you to stay stuck longer.

When you practice these ways to find peace in whatever moment you are in, you will find solutions that might not otherwise be available to you.
