How to Work Safely in the Garden

SpringHow to Work Safely in the Garden is here which means it’s time to dust off your gardening gloves and get to work. While gardening is a fun and rewarding way to get your hands dirty, it also comes with a few risks that you want to keep in mind to stay safe.

When it comes to your health and well being, it’s good to look after yourself by looking after your garden.

But whether you’re planting a new flower bed, or trimming trees, you need to take on these tips to enjoy the garden time without any surprises.

5 Tips For Working Safely in the Garden

1. Watch Out for Tree Pollen!

Spring is a beautiful time of year. Everything is blooming, and the air is filled with the scent of flowers. But it’s also the season to sneeze, and if you’re sensitive to tree pollen, then you may need to be careful when you’re working outside. If you’re one of those unlucky people who suffer from tree pollen allergies, gardening can be a bit of a minefield. When you’re working outside, it’s a good idea to take an antihistamine before you get out there. You should also keep those allergies in check by wearing a mask. This is especially the case on windy days when the pollen is flying around.

2. Dress for Success – and Safety!

Gardening can be a laid back activity, but there are a few wardrobe choices that you should keep in mind. You need gardening gloves because you’ll never know what you’re going to come in contact with in the garden. Thorny plants, dirt, or even harmful chemicals can hurt your skin. Long sleeves and long pants will also be a good idea, especially if you’re handling prickly plants or working with pesticides. Don’t forget sturdy shoes. Slip on sandals might be cute but they won’t protect your feet.

3. Keep Hydrated – and Take Breaks

You can get sweaty when you’re in the garden, especially if you’re digging, planting, or hauling compost. Drink plenty of water and stay hydrated while you work. Dehydration is a thing, and you don’t want to shrivel up like those old petunias you’re trying to dig out.

4. Watch Out for Insects

Insects are a part of gardening life, but while the bees and butterflies are cute and pretty, there are some bugs that are a little less friendly. If you’re allergic to bee stings, be extra cautious when working around flowering plants and always carry an epinephrine injector just in case.

5. Use Tools Properly

If you’re not confident in using gardening tools, then don’t use them. Hiring experts to come and do anything that requires power tools for you can help. Whether you’re using Rakes, hoes, or a whole hedge trimmer, you have to handle them carefully. Always make sure that your tools are in good condition, and that you’re not cutting through any wires.

By protecting yourself, you’ll be able to enjoy all the benefits of gardening without any unwanted mishaps. So grab those gloves, roll up your sleeves, and start planting – your garden (and your body) will thank you.
