When to Fix Broken Siding Yourself and When to Hire the Pros

When to Fix Broken Siding Yourself and When to Hire the ProsIf you have siding on your house, you’re in good company. Many modern homes feature siding. You can find it in vinyl, but also brick, wood, stone veneer, certain kind of metal, and fiber cement.

If you see that you have a broken piece of siding that needs to be fixed, that probably won’t make you very happy. You can always reach out to a qualified siding company, Arvada, CO homeowners, but before you do, you may also give replacing the siding yourself some thought.

When should you call in the pros for this kind of a job, and when should you try to make those repairs on your own? We’ll talk about that in detail right now.

What Kind of Siding Do You Have?

First, it’s important that you think about what kind of siding you have. Maybe you’d like to swap out some broken pieces of siding on your own, but you have a kind that’s notoriously difficult to replace.

Some kinds of siding have the reputation of being easy to replace, and others less so. If you have vinyl or engineered wood siding, you can probably count those as the ones that you can replace more easily.

It’s because of how you install or uninstall it. Both engineered wood and vinyl siding pieces snap rather easily into place.

There’s a special tool, a kind of pry bar you can get to jam under the piece of cracked or otherwise damaged siding and pull it out. You can also install new pieces in much the same way, though you must also bolt them to side of the house to make sure they stay in place when the wind blows or you have rain storms.

If you have another kind, like metal or brick, you might want to call a professional for that. Removing broken pieces and installing new ones represents a somewhat more difficult prospect if you don’t have a background in this area.

Do You Have Any DIY Skills?

You should also ask yourself honestly how much DIY skill you have. Some people, through no fault of their own, seem to struggle with manual labor or blue-collar tasks around the house.

It’s admirable if you want to learn a new skill, and you will certainly find plentiful YouTube videos that explain how to do just about anything, including siding replacement. However, just because it looks easy in the videos, that does not always mean you’ll find it that simple and straightforward in real life.

You should want to improve your DIY skills as a homeowner, but you should also admit your limitations. Replacing the broken siding pieces on your own will save you money, but if you also know you tend to struggle with this kind of work and it only frustrates you, then you might want to hire a pro for that reason.

Paying the extra money to a contractor may seem worth it if saves you the frustration and possible injury that would accompany a day of siding replacement.

How Much Money Do You Have?

Maybe you simply don’t have very much cash at the moment, but you still want to replace the broken pieces of siding. Remember that replacing broken siding pieces isn’t just about aesthetics.

If you leave a broken piece of siding on a house, it can get worse if you have some rough weather. Also, insects and rodents can take shelter in the crack, and they might enter the house that way and nest in the walls, especially in the colder months.

If you don’t have the money to hire a pro, then you may need to rely on your DIY skills if you still want to do the job. You can wait till you have more in savings, or you can watch those YouTube videos and tackle the project. If so, you might try to enlist the help of a friend, relative, or neighbor with some blue-collar skills.

Do You Rent the House or Own It?

You should also think about whether you rent the house or own it. If you own it, then you can either try to do whatever repairs on it you think best, or you can hire someone if you’d prefer that.

If you rent the house, then the landlord probably doesn’t want you doing any unauthorized repairs. You must contact them and see if they will hire someone. Hopefully, they will do so with a minimum of convincing.
