Why Dental Hygiene is Especially Important During and After the Holidays

Why Dental Hygiene is Especially Important During and After the HolidaysThe holidays are just around the corner, and many of us will be excitedly making plans. But, how many of us will be thinking about our teeth? Across Christmas and New Year holidays, it is always tempting to indulge in sweet treats a little too enthusiastically, with easter and the summer months are no different for other indulgences.

The Oral Health Foundation recently released figures highlighting the enormous amounts of sugar – in some cases over 12 teaspoons – contained in some of the most popular drinks offered by the nation’s favourite coffee chains. Combine this with those extra sweet cocktails, desserts and fizzy drinks consumed during the average holiday and it all adds up to big trouble for the teeth.

Hopefully, you will have consulted with your dental hygienist to re-brighten your smile and reboot your dental hygiene routine following the festive blowout. But as the holidays approach, whether you are planning an exotic destination or a staycation, here are tips to maintain good dental hygiene.

Before you go

It is a good idea to visit your dentist for a check-up before you go on holiday. This ensures any looming dental problems can be found and treated early to prevent expensive treatments later. This can help to prevent any worsening of the situation while you’re away. The last thing you need is a toothache or abscess ruining your trip.

What to include in your packing

Before setting off, take a little extra time to make sure all your dental hygiene essentials are included in your packing. Things to take with you could include:

  • Toothbrush and toothpaste
  • Interdental brushes or dental floss
  • Alcohol-free mouthwashes
  • The contact details of an emergency dentist – just in case

Take travel-sized versions with you if you are subject to airport restrictions.

When you are there

When you’re on holiday, it is important to stick to your normal daily routine. Brush your teeth twice a day for a full two minutes each time. Don’t forget to use your interdental brushes or floss to dislodge any food particles between the teeth and remove plaque. If you wear dentures or braces, remember to clean them according to your dental hygienist’s instructions.

Be sensible with food and drink (but not too sensible)

During the warmer months, when temperatures rise, you must stay hydrated. It’s especially important if you’re on an activity holiday. Hydration is crucial to keep the mouth and teeth healthy as it helps rinse away food particles and neutralise acids, reducing the risk of bad breath and tooth decay.

Try to avoid excessive consumption of sugary drinks and snacks. It’s okay to spoil yourself a little bit when on holiday. However, if you do, make sure to rinse your mouth out with water afterwards to minimise any damage that sugar can do to your teeth.

Be aware also that alcohol can have a negative effect on teeth and gums. Alcohol can dry up the saliva, and without saliva’s natural protection, your whole mouth can become dry. This can cause:

  • Bad breath, because the mucus membranes in your mouth are unable to wash away bad breath-causing bacteria.
  • Tooth decay or gum disease because a lack of saliva can cause acid erosion.

So be sure to drink alcohol in moderation to protect teeth and gums.
