Looking after your overall wellness means paying attention to all parts of your health, even the ones you might not think about daily.
Your hearing is a huge part of how you experience the world, whether you’re listening to your favorite music or chatting with loved ones. Supporting your hearing doesn’t have to be hard; it’s often about adding small, thoughtful habits to your everyday life.
Protecting your hearing is an ongoing effort, much like eating well or staying active. One of the most important things you can do is control how much loud noise you’re exposed to. If you’re using headphones or earbuds, try the 60/60 rule: keep the volume at no more than 60% of the maximum and listen for no longer than 60 minutes at a time. It’s also good to give your ears a break. If you’ve been somewhere noisy, like a concert or a busy city street, find a quiet spot to let your auditory system recover.
You can start many simple everyday habits to improve hearing today. For example, regular exercise boosts blood flow to the inner ear, which is vital for it to work properly. Also, managing stress with things like meditation or yoga can help, since high stress levels are linked to issues like tinnitus. Being aware of these small lifestyle factors can all add up to good long-term hearing health and help you protect your hearing for years.
Ever notice your hearing feels muffled or “off” when you have a cold? That’s pretty common. Your ears, nose, and throat are all connected, so congestion and inflammation from an illness can affect your hearing. Fluid can build up in the middle ear behind the eardrum, making it feel full and temporarily muffling sounds.
This doesn’t just happen with colds. Allergies and sinus infections can have the same effect, creating pressure that messes with normal hearing. Knowing the link between colds and temporary hearing loss can be reassuring, as these changes usually don’t last long and clear up once you get over the illness. It just shows how all our body’s systems are connected.
While temporary hearing changes from a cold are normal, it’s smart to know when to pay closer attention. If you suddenly lose a lot of hearing in one or both ears and it doesn’t seem linked to an illness, it’s a good idea to see a professional. The same goes for any hearing loss that comes with pain, dizziness, or a constant ringing sound called tinnitus.
Also, pay attention if your hearing doesn’t go back to normal after a cold or sinus infection has passed. If that muffled feeling sticks around for more than a week or two, it’s worth getting checked out. Listening to your body and noticing lasting changes is a key part of staying on top of your health.
When your ears feel full or pressured from a flight or a mild cold, there are a few easy things you can do to get relief. Moving the muscles in your jaw and throat can help open your Eustachian tubes, which control pressure in the middle ear.
A warm, moist cloth held against the outside of your ear can also feel good, but be careful not to use anything that could get inside your ear canal. Most importantly, never put cotton swabs, hairpins, or any other objects into your ear canal. This can push earwax deeper or, even worse, damage your delicate eardrum.
Taking these small, gentle steps to care for your ears is an easy way to include hearing wellness in your self-care routine. Just like any other part of your body, your ears benefit from a little attention and care.
