What is your Ikigai? How To Live With Purpose And Passion

what is your ikigai purpose passionThere’s a Japanese term called Ikigai, which is all about living with purpose and passion.

This philosophy is not just about hustling for your own dreams, but also about carving out a meaningful spot for yourself in the bigger picture – your community and the world at large.

See the image for a more complete visual explanation.

Consider Ikigai your guide to crafting a life filled with purpose and a genuine sense of excitement.

Basically, Ikigai is not merely about chasing your own ambitions. It is about finding where you fit in the world – and how you can contribute to something larger than yourself.

Best of all, when you tap into your Ikigai, the joy and fulfillment you feel can actually turn into financial prosperity too.

I’m not just throwing theories at you. There’s solid research backing this up!

For example, a 2010 study from the Journal of Vocational Behavior reports a clear link between playing to your strengths at work – being more productive – and making more money.

Why does Ikigai help you to live with purpose and passion?

Because you’re doing what you love. And what you’re good at. Plus what you’re meant to do. All while doing something that the world needs.

And that’s quite a powerful combo!

Want to embrace ikigai?

I encourage you to grab a journal and ask yourself the following questions:

  • What am I passionate about?
  • What are my core strengths?
  • How can my passions and strengths serve what the world needs?
  • What can I be paid for that fulfills all the above?

Journaling can be a reflective practice that allows you to discover the intersections between your passions, skills, and the needs of the world. It can be a huge key to unlocking your Ikigai.

Here are the 4 prompts I journaled about to determine my Ikigai

1. What am I passionate about?

My response: Using my creativity. Learning new things. Helping others to live lives they love. Spending time with loved ones. Cooking new fun recipes. Watching movies. Reading books.

2. What are my core strengths?

My response: Writing, designing and thinking in innovative ways. Doing marketing, branding and analyzing people/situations. Problem solving. Motivating people and helping them to release their limiting beliefs so they can live live life at their highest potential.

3. How can my passions and strengths serve the world?

My response: I’ve come to realize that the world needs more people who are healing their emotional wounds and releasing their limiting beliefs – so they can feel happier, braver, and capable of creating a life they love.

4. What can I be paid for that fulfills all the above?

My response: I realized I could be paid for offering my Mindset Mastery Coaching Sessions – so I can help people to heal their emotional wounds. And release their limiting beliefs. So they can feel happier, braver and capable of creating a life they love!

I love knowing I can make a huge difference in someone’s life! THIS helps me to pop out of bed every morning! (Oh – and a shout out to coffee too!)

To illustrate the diversity of Ikigai, let’s look beyond my own experiences.

  • Take Akira, a client of mine, who found his Ikigai in combining his love for art with his skill in teaching to provide art therapy workshops.
  • Plus there’s my client Sofia, who merges her passion for sustainable living with her talent in coding to create apps that help people live more eco-friendly lives.

These stories show that Ikigai is a dynamic journey, reflecting a person’s evolution and the changing needs of society.

Reminder:

Your Ikigai isn’t set in stone. It’s a journey that moves with you, shaping itself as you evolve – and as the world shifts around us. As you uncover new layers of your passions, and start to see the unique impact you wish to have on the world, your Ikigai will naturally transform.
