7 Steps To Help Your Elderly Parents Out

Here are 7 steps you can take to make things a bit easier for for your aging patents.

1. Understand their needs

As our parents age, their needs will change and it’s important to try to understand what those changes are. They may need help with things they used to be able to do on their own, such as cooking or cleaning. They may even need to move into assisted living apartments away from you. Or they may simply need someone to talk to on a regular basis. Whatever the case may be, try to be understanding and patient as you figure out what they need from you.

2. Make sure they’re eating right

It’s important for elderly people to eat a balanced diet in order to stay healthy. This means plenty of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and not too much sugar or saturated fat. If your parents are having trouble preparing their own meals, see if you can help out or find someone who can do it for them.

3. Help them stay active

Exercise is important for people of all ages, but it’s especially crucial for seniors. It can help improve their balance and flexibility and reduce the risk of falls. Even if they’re not able to get out and about as much as they used to, there are still ways for them to stay active. Maybe you can help them walk around the block or do some simple exercises at home with them.

4. Keep an eye on their medications

As we get older, we tend to take more medications than ever before. It’s important to make sure that our elderly parents are taking their medications as prescribed and not missing any doses. You can help them by keeping track of their medications and setting up reminders for them to take them.

It’s always a good idea to check in on our elderly parents from time to time, even if they’re seemingly doing fine. This way you can spot any early warning signs of problems, such as illness or depression. If possible, try to visit them in person or give them a call at least once a week. And make sure to do something loving with your elderly parents during holidays.

6. Help with finances

Finances can be a big source of stress for elderly people. They may be on a fixed income, or they may have trouble paying their bills. You can help by offering to assist with budgeting or financial planning. If they’re having difficulty paying for their medications or other essentials, see if there are any assistance programs available that can help.

7. Make sure their home is safe

As we age, our risk of injury from falls increases. This is why it’s important to make sure that our elderly parents’ homes are as safe as possible. Remove any tripping hazards, such as rugs or electrical cords, and install grab bars in the bathroom and shower. If they live alone, consider getting them an emergency alarm for elderly individuals that they can use to summon help in case of an emergency.
