When you’re stressed, a chemical response happens in your skin, making it more sensitive and reactive.

Stress and anxiety can also make it more difficult for existing skin problems to heal.

As you might know, I am a recovered stress sufferer – and truly know what it’s like to try to manage uncomfortable emotions during challenging times.

I wrote a bestselling meditation guide called Instant Calm and founded the groundbreaking video course called The Anxiety Cure.

I love sharing insights and strategies to help people stay calm, relaxed, healthy, happy – especially in tough times.

With this in mind I put together this quick guide to help you to combat stress that shows up on your skin.

How to Combat Stress That Shows Up on Your Skin

Whatever skincare problem you find yourself suffering from as a result of anxiety and stress, there are thankfully skincare treatments and routines you can use to treat the issue. For instance, you could consider getting personalized skincare treatment from professional skincare dermatologists such as NavaMDin which the treatment is specifically formulated for your specific skin and issue.

But you should also take steps to reduce the stress that’s causing the skin problem. Simple things like regularly exercising, taking a bath, and using stress management techniques like yoga, meditation, or breathing exercises, can all help to make you feel calmer and more in control. Now, let’s take a look at eight signs of skin issues that could be caused by feeling stressed and anxious.

 1. Your Skin Is Itchy

8 Signs of Anxiety and Stress That Show Up On Skin And HelpWhen you’re going through a period of intense anxiety, your skin could start to feel itchy. That could be a sign of the condition known as pruritus. The reason anxiety can manifest as pruritus is anxiety is a neural condition, which means your nerves can become super-sensitive to any mild itch. Dermatologists recommend having a regular skincare routine of using moisturizers and over-the-counter creams to treat itchy skin. Washing your body more often can also help.

2. You Have Dry Patches on Your Face and Scalp

If you notice dry patches on your face and scalp, it could be a sign of seborrheic dermatitis, which can be caused by stress. The precise skincare routine needed to treat this condition will depend on your specific needs, but dermatologists will likely recommend medicated creams.

3. You Get a Cold Sore

Stress and anxiety can cause cold sores on your lips or around the mouth. Thankfully, there are various effective over-the-counter skincare products you can use to treat cold sores.

4. Your Skin Is Itchy, Dry, and Red

If your skin is itchy, dry, and red, you could have eczema. Steroid creams are a good option for treating eczema. Oral medicines and light therapy can also help.

5. You Have Flaky or Discolored Patches of Skin

If you have symptoms like flaky skin, inflammation, and red, white, or silvery patches of skin, you could have the chronic skin condition psoriasis, which can be caused by stress. To treat psoriasis, use a good moisturizer on a daily basis. You could also use topical treatments in the form of ointments, foams, or creams, which you rub into your skin.

6. Your Face Is Red and Bumpy

You could have the skin condition rosacea, which can be caused by stress, if your face looks like it’s blushing and you have bumps that resemble acne. You can take medicated skincare products to treat rosacea, such as the gel brimonidine and antibiotics like metronidazole and doxycycline.

7. Pink Bumps Form Around Your Nose or Mouth

If you notice pink scaly bumps forming around your nose or mouth, you could have the skin condition perioral dermatitis, which can be caused by anxiety. Skincare products that include adaptogenic herbs can help this condition, in addition to using stress-reduction techniques.

8. You Pick at Your Skin

Severely anxious people can pick at their skin, causing pockmarks and scabs. If you find yourself anxiously picking, cognitive behavioral therapy and destressing exercises like yoga are the best solutions, but medicated SSRIs could help too.
