I love this powerful Buddha quote about enemies.
“Your worst enemy cannot harm you as much as your own unguarded thoughts.”-Buddha
Right now, I want you to take a moment to pause – and become aware of how you have been speaking to yourself.
I want you to ask yourself:
Would you allow SOMEBODY ELSE to say some of the mean/negative things you might be saying to yourself?
Is your answer is NO WAY?
If so, I want you to stop your negative thoughts with my powerful simple refocusing tool (below).
As you might know, I’m a bestselling author and happiness researcher.
I wrote a book called Happy Habits.
In my research, I learned a lot of interesting psychological tricks for building up specific positive habits- and busting those naughty ones.
In this article I’ll be focusing on a “habit formation trick” – which I call:
“The STOP and SWAP”
- Basically, I don’t want you to simply try to STOP your negative thoughts and habits.
- I also want you to make sure you SWAP the negative thoughts and habits with POSITIVE ones.
Why must you do a STOP and SWAP and not merely a STOP?
Because it’s far easier to stop a thought or habit, when you give it a replacement.
For example…
Let’s say you wanted to stop a puppy from chewing on your slipper.
It helps if you give the puppy something else to chew on – maybe a bone.
After all, the puppy has this urge to chew on something.
If you don’t give the puppy something NEW to chew on, it will keep chewing the slipper.
Similarly your mind has the urge to chew on something.
If you simply only try to STOP the negative thought and habit, and don’t give yourself something NEW to chew on instead, you will keep going back to chewing on the negative thought and bad habit.
Some ideas for STOP and SWAP’s:
- Choose a positive reminder of something you know you’ve done wonderfully in your life.
- Think about some talent/strength/quality/skill you know you have.
- Enjoy a moment of gratitude for some wonderful person/event/experience in your life.
- Go for a walk or put on some music and dance.
- Take a bubble bath or shower
- Call a friend or read an inspiring book
