Some say there’s order in disorder, but for most of us, the things that no longer serve us create extra chaos. Whether it’s a relationship that doesn’t work anymore, an old vehicle you’re emotionally attached to, or clothes you’ve never worn, they all have one thing in common: they occupy physical and mental space in your life.
If you’re the kind of person who has a hard time letting go, this is a sing it’s time to declutter. And, while you can’t just organize a yard sale for your failed relationships, you can still get a few bucks off of the old things lying around, gathering dust in your space.
Today, we’ll talk about why targeted decluttering is essential for a good life and, while doing so, how to turn your junk into cash.
Declutter Your Space and Mind
Know that feeling when you’re done cleaning and organizing, and the entire house is sparkling? It’s a sensation of satisfaction, peace, and pride that you don’t get from many other activities. As it turns out, we’re wired for it.
Our thirsty big brains love order. When your field of vision is cluttered by multiple visual stimuli (a pile of clothes on the corner chair, kids’ toys on the floor, and a messy kitchen), the brain has to work harder to keep track of everything.
Not to mention, clutter works hand in hand with procrastination. A messy space triggers feelings of overwhelm, which leads to task avoidance, which leads to more clutter. So, the best exercise for your body and mind you can do today is start decluttering. It doesn’t have to be the whole house; a corner in a room is enough, if that’s all you have energy for.
Your Junk is Another’s Treasure
Now, let’s take all the satisfaction and mental benefits of decluttering and step it up a notch. And what’s better than peace and a good workout? Getting some money out of it, of course!
Of course, unless you have some amazing collectible items buried deep in a trunk in the attic, don’t expect to make bank with your junk. But, you may be able to pay for your coffee for a week or maybe a bit more.
The trick to maximizing your return is matching the right category of junk to the right marketplace. Let’s say you have an old car occupying your garage. Before you junk it at the nearest scrap yard, ask yourself: how much is my junk car worth?
You might be surprised by the answer. On the right market, with the right buyer, you may be able to get a pretty penny for your old lady rusting away on your driveway.
Furniture is the same. If you have any old-looking cabinets, chairs, tables, or armoires that are still functional, place them on Facebook Marketplace or your local buy-sell group. You never know who might want to take them on as a DIY project.
Free the Mind, Enrich Your Wallet
If you’re having trouble letting go, decluttering is a fantastic activity. Besides its amazing mental and physical benefits, it helps you practice for those times when you’d like to stick around without a solid reason. And you get to make some money out of it. If that’s not a win-win, I don’t know what is.
