Time is finite, and people are busy. Families are extremely busy these days. Between work, school, parenting your kids, caring for your parents, and still trying to get food on the table at the end of a packed day, things can get pushed to the wayside.
Instead of thinking that you will get to it, whatever it may be, later, take a head-on approach to getting things done and doing more. You might have to reschedule or shift your priorities, but you will be glad you did.
If you have loved ones close to you who have passed away, you have probably had a front row seat to everything involved with the end-of-life experience. If you were an executor of one of their wills, then you know a little more. If you were grateful that everything was in place and accounted for with the will and other paperwork, your job was probably relatively easy. If you could not locate the will or other important documents, you may still be dealing with the legal logistics years later.
Take note of what you learned and act accordingly to ensure your family does not have to deal with scouring your home or going through a lengthy probate process. Instead, contact a qualified accountant to help prepare your taxes and other essential documents. Remember to update them as time passes, to include new family members, a marriage, a death, and as your income or decisions change.
Of course, you see your kid at school drop-off and pick-up. You might eat dinner together most nights during the week. But weeknights are busy with homework, bedtime, and end-of-the-day responsibilities for you. Weekends are ever-crowded with travel teams and other sports activities. As your kids get older, they will naturally gravitate elsewhere. While you still can, work to spend more quality time together.
Make it a plan to go on a trip with just the parents or one parent and one child, and rotate years. Or go on a family vacation that you all plan and attend together. Create memories by baking meals together or training for a family 5k fun run. Avoid picking up your phone every time it pings or buzzes and focus your attention on the important people in your life. For perspective, you only have 18 summers with your kids before they move on to their own adventure. Make them count. Of note, you will actually have more time with your kids, but this serves as an incentive to make memories.
While there are many important things you should do in your life, sooner rather than later, these are only some of them. Add these things to your to-do list and then check them off quickly. Be sure to keep “Family Time” on regular rotation on your family calendar or as the opportunity arises. Life will always be busy. There will always be something else to do. It is up to you to make it happen.
