How to Decide If Gardening Is the Right Hobby for You

How to Decide If Gardening Is the Right Hobby for You There are many hobbies out there but gardening is one of the best ones around. It’s not for everybody and if you’re contemplating it you may be wondering whether or not it is right for you.

It is only natural that you would wander this, after all, it requires a big amount of commitment and may take up a chunk of your valuable time. You want to make sure that it is completely right for you. There are a few things that you should keep in mind if you’re trying to decide if gardening is good for you.

I’m sharing about this topic of gardening as a hobby because I’m a bestselling author and happiness researcher.

I wrote a book called Happy Habits.

In my research, I learned a lot about how hobbies are very positive habits which can help people to destress, meditate, and feel more confident and happy.

In this article I will explore is gardening is the right hobby for you.

Understand Your Interest and Motivation

A fundamental aspect of gardening is that love for nature and if you have this it may be the right hobby for you. Take inventory of your interest and see if you enjoy spending time outdoors observing plants and then watching them grow. If this is you then it’s in your best interest that you have plants, and flowers in the environment all around you.

You Need a Creative Outlet

Gardening offers you the opportunity to create a canvas outside. If you enjoy designing landscapes, experimenting with different gardening sizes as well as growing plants you will find that gardening is one of those excellent ways that you can express your creativity very freely.

Let your imagination run wild when it comes to how you want to design your garden and lay out your flowers. However, it doesn’t have to be an extravagant project. You can plant a flower, design a vegetable patch or create a theme garden. The possibilities are just endless when it comes to gardening and you should take advantage of it if you find yourself having an interest.

Interested in Learning and Experimenting

Gardening seems to be a continuous learning process and there’s a lot you’re going to find out. You’re going to be learning how to understand soil and plant needs and be that person who experiments with different garden techniques.

The possibilities are endless and your creativity can sore like an eagle when you get into gardening. There’s always something new to discover and learn. If you find that you have a very curious mind and you enjoy learning then gardening is one of the best hobbies you can take on.

Time Commitment

Gardening is going to require you to give up a lot of your time and you must be dedicated to it. You need to think about how much time you can realistically spend gardening every single week. Remember you have to tend to your flowers or they may stop blooming and looking beautiful. For example, if you have plants like Hosta, you will need to care for Hosta regularly to keep them blooming.

If you have a very busy schedule you might want to start off with some low-maintenance plants or smaller gardening projects to begin with. As you start to become more comfortable and master everything you can expand your efforts widely.

Whatever you do make sure that you’re keeping weeds out of your garden as they can suffocate your healthy growing plants. You can use a weed eater to help you control this.

Physical Capability

Gardening can force a lot of different activities and you may find yourself weeding, planting, digging and watering. This will help you to assess your physical capabilities and your limitations as well. While you don’t exactly have to be an Olympic Athlete to take on gardening, you are going to be stretching your body and it’s always good to be in shape.

Make sure you know your limitations. However, there are adaptive tools and techniques that are available if you have physical constraints so this should not put you off gardening altogether.

Space Availability

One of the things you must make sure you have before you take on gardening is the availability of space. When you have a large backyard it’s easy to envision a flower garden that is blooming and see birds chirping and bees buzzing everywhere.

However, when you have a small space your options are a little more limited. Container gardening or vertical indoor gardening are very good alternatives if you have a limited space to work with.

The  Benefits

Physical Benefits

The first set of benefits you’re going to have is an increase in your physical health because gardening is a moderate kind of exercise. It’s going to involve a lot of lifting, walking, bending and stretching and this can only enhance your flexibility and strength and give you better cardiovascular health.

If you’re looking for a hobby that’s going to promote your well-being then this is an excellent choice.

Mental Health Benefits

The therapy you get from gardening is massive as well. You can reduce stress and anxiety as well as depression and promote a high level of relaxation and mindfulness in your life.

If you’re seeking a hobby that’s going to support mental health and give you a peaceful and meditative experience that you won’t soon forget, gardening is the way to go.

Connect with Nature

You’re going to be able to connect with nature in a big way. As an observer of the seasons, it becomes critical for you to understand nature so that you can have blooming flowers and plants. Your connection with nature will also include wildlife as well.

You’re going to find that several of them are attracted to your garden although some will be more detrimental to it while others will not be. Learning how to deal with them in a humane way is one of the tasks that you will learn as you garden.

If you love sustainability and eco-friendliness gardening can be a way for you to participate in this as well by growing things organically.

If you’re ready to dive in when it comes to gardening, then you must have a very clear idea about the personality traits you should have to consider gardening. You also need to know all the benefits that you are going to receive from it. All you have to do is decide if it’s right for you, so that you can start buying your tools and start living as one with nature, the true gardening.
