Nerves are like the body’s electrical wiring, carrying signals that keep us moving and feeling. Just like wiring issues in a house, our nervous system can also experience faults. Some of these can be minor while others can be serious.
In this post, we’ll take a look at five common nerve problems to look out for and how to prevent, manage and treat them.
Carpal tunnel syndrome
Carpal tunnel syndrome is a condition caused by repetitive actions like typing, using tools or playing instruments. It results in the median nerve in the wrist becoming compressed. This leads to tingling, numbness and pain in the fingers and hands.
Millions of people develop this condition every year and it can be very uncomfortable. Fortunately, pain can be relieved by taking anti-inflammatory meds or using a wrist splint. Surgery may even be an option in severe cases.
To avoid getting carpal tunnel syndrome, take regular breaks from repetitive activities and pay attention to correct posture and ergonomics.
Diabetic neuropathy
Diabetic neuropathy is a potential symptom of diabetes. High blood sugar levels cause damage to nerves in the legs and feet – which can cause pain, numbness or pins and needles. Over time, it may even lead to loss of sensation.
Tingling in the toes is a common early sign. Consider getting tested for diabetes if you experience this and other symptoms like frequent urination or increased thirst. By controlling your blood sugar levels through diet and exercise, you can prevent diabetic neuropathy from getting worse.
Multiple sclerosis
Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an autoimmune disease in which the immune system attacks the nervous system. This disrupts signals around the body leading to fatigue, vision problems, coordination issues and muscle weakness. Symptoms often get worse gradually over many years.
While there’s unfortunately no cure, modern medications and physical therapy can slow down progression. Early diagnosis via MRI or spinal taps can also allow you to take action early.
Sciatica
Sciatica is a condition that causes irritation to the sciatic nerve, which runs from your lower back down both legs. It’s often caused by a herniated disc or spinal stenosis – such conditions cause the sciatic nerve to become compressed and lead to sharp pains or tingles running from the buttocks to the feet.
With the help of a physical therapist, it’s often possible to explore sciatica nerve pain treatment. Ice/heat therapy may also help to alleviate pain, plus surgery and injections are available for severe cases.
To prevent developing sciatica, take care when lifting heavy objects to avoid slipped discs and also watch your weight.
Tooth nerve pain
Tooth nerve pain occurs when the nerve inside the tooth becomes inflamed due to decay or cracks. You may experience a throbbing ache or pain when biting. Sensitivity to hot and cold is also common.
If there is an infection inside your tooth, a doctor will have to perform root canal treatment to remove the infection. Catch the problem early and you won’t have to remove the entire tooth.
To prevent tooth nerve pain, make sure to maintain good dental hygiene and avoid using your teeth as a tool (opening bottles or biting open packaging could cause tiny cracks to form that encourage infections).
