The idea of getting old is something that the vast majority of people put to the back of their mind. After all, it always seems like it is a long way away and hasn’t happened yet.
But, of course, even if you’re in your thirties, you may already be feeling the effects of the aging process. It’s not something that happens overnight, but it;s definitely there.
The question is how to cope with this change and manage it as part of your relationships and career. What do you need to do to manage the journey successfully?
That’s the question we look to answer in this post. We discuss some of the tactics and strategies you can use to manage the aging process and help it chime with your life naturally.
So, what do you need to do?
Take Stock Of Where You Are Now
The first step is to look at where you are now and what it means for your life as a whole. You can ask whether the aging process is preventing you from doing anything you want to do in your life, or whether it is just causing a few gripes here and there.
Taking stock of where you are now involves asking whether it is getting in the way of anything you do day to day. For example, is it preventing you from completing your work to the standard you want?
You can also look at whether it is affecting you based on its effects on you overall health and ability to engage in the personal life you want. Knowing how much it is intruding on your life can be helpful if you want to plot a course forward.
Sometimes when you go through this process, you’ll discover that the effects of aging are less than you think. While it will inevitably affect you in some ways, you may discover that it isn’t preventing you from living the life you want, at least not yet.
Get Help From People Who Know What To Expect
It can also help if you get assistance from people who understand what it is like to experience certain aspects of the aging process. Talking to these individuals can help you learn more about what to expect and what to do about it.
When you talk to other people, you can get advice on how to better manage your situation. For example, they may recommend local clubs to go to or suggest specific mobility aids that benefited them when they were finding getting around challenging.
These conversations aren’t always pleasant, but they can be helpful. The more you can demystify the process of getting older, the less imposing it may seem.
Consider The Products You Need
The next step is to think about the products that you need to support you as you get older. What do you need for your home and getting around?
The answers to this question will change and evolve over time. In all likelihood, you don’t need to do a great deal right now. However, planning ahead is helpful, particularly if you have a chronic condition you need to manage,
For example, you could start with adult overnight diapers. These are convenient and help you manage any incontinence issues. Then, you can move onto things like home modifications to ensure you can continue to get around and remain independent in your home.
It can also help to invest in new forms of transport. For example, you could buy a regular vehicle with added extras to support you while you drive (as long as it is legal to do so). Alternatively, you could put your money into a mobility scooter for getting to the store.
Talk To A Care Agency
You also want to start conversations with a care agency as early as possible. Talking to these professionals can help you map out your care plan and figure out what your life will look like if your situation deteriorates.
Cultivate A Positive Mindset
You can also make the situation more pleasant by changing your attitude toward the aging process. While this might not be as simple as it sounds, it can help you massively in the long-term.
One of the best methods is to embrace the idea of self-compassion. Being kind to yourself about getting older and accepting the fact that you have a human body and that it will age can help a great deal.
You can also cultivate a sense of gratitude in your life for having made it this far. Being happy about your situation no matter what life throws at you is often a recipe for happiness, wellbeing and overall life satisfaction.
Furthermore, if you’re the sort of person who struggles with negative internal voices, you can challenge yourself-talk. Asking yourself whether the things you’re saying are really fair or make sense can be an excellent way to shut down this negativity.
Look After Your Physical Health
If you want to take a more active role in your health, you can do that, too. This approach gives you a sense of control over the aging process.
Furthermore, increasing evidence suggests that getting older is something modifiable. The more interventions you add as habits in your life, the better off you’ll be.
For example, you could start with something simple in your life, like cutting out added sugar. Then you could start a gym membership, remove oils and dairy foods, and eventually move over to a diet of whole foods. If you wanted to take it even further, you could also start fasting or take supplements.
Sleep isn’t as important for longevity as the mainstream media believes. But aiming for seven to nine hours of quality sleep per night is always helpful and motivates you to eat better and exercise more.
Keep Your Mind Active
Keeping your mind active is also extremely helpful as you get older. While it isn’t quite as effective as eating well and exercising, practicing various brain games can have an effect,
The best approach is to engage in the process of life-long learning. People who constantly train their brain in this way tend to have the most cognitive reserve, or the ability to resist cognitive decline in older age.
It also helps to engage in social interaction. Connecting with friends regularly trains the mirror neurons in the brain, and epidemiological studies show that this can be effective in keeping people mentally active for longer.
Lastly, you could try experimenting with brain games. These are ideal if you only see people once a week. These games test your mind in different ways, including your ability to think numerically, spatially and logically.
Foster Strong Relationships With People
Finally, it can be highly beneficial to foster stronger relationships with people. The more you can connect with others around you, the better you can cope with the aging process, and even thrive.
For example, you could volunteer in your community and do work in your retirement. This could be as part of a faith community, charity effort, or even just something you organize yourself in your community.
Another more laid-back approach is to join various clubs or social organizations. These can be fun, especially if you want something to do at the weekend.
Finally, simply building new connections with the people around your community can also help with coping. Building new friendships is one of the most effective ways to be happy and enjoy getting older.
So there you have it: some of the ways to cope as you age.
