Bluntly put here, sometimes the problem with a business isn’t the branding, the staff, the product, the booking system, or even the marketing. Sometimes the problem is the building. Like, the actual space your customers walk into.
The building that you don’t even own, the one you rent, and you need to protect your business, so maybe things aren’t working out the way they should be. Yeah, that sounds a bit too simple, but think about it. If you run a salon, café, clinic, shop, studio, office, or anything customer-facing, the space is part of the experience.
Basically, it’s the little first impression they get before anyone has even said hello. So, if the landlord won’t let you change much, well, that can start to feel like a real problem. A problem that might mean you need to move.
Your Space Might be Saying the Wrong Thing
You can have a gorgeous brand online and then a totally different feeling in person. For example, here your website says modern and thoughtful, but the customer walks into a dim room with flooring that looks old and beaten, dated signage (not in a fun quirky way either), and so on. Clearly, that’s not ideal, right?
And sometimes business owners know exactly what they’d change. Sure, it could be a full-blown transformation, or it could be something simple, like new lighting, a mural from a mural artist, better counters, better equipment, better safety systems, and whatever else. But landlords are so weird, well, almost downright cruel when you even think of improving their property.
It’s Hard Getting Permission
Now, it’s best to just state here that renting can be great when the space works. It keeps things flexible, and you’re not responsible for every weird building issue that shows up. But when every improvement needs permission, the whole thing gets annoying fast. And well, inefficient, because theres so many roadblocks now, how can you create the customer experience you want to give if your landlord is always saying no?
Buying Might be Worth Considering
Now, this doesn’t mean buying a property is automatically the answer. That’s a big step, and no business owner should buy a place just because the landlord is irritating this month, or next, or forever (granted, it makes sense you’d want that). But if the space is limiting growth, hurting the customer experience, and stopping you from making changes that actually matter, it may be worth looking into what a business mortgage could involve before assuming renting is the only realistic option. But more importantly here, can you afford that?
Just Think About What Customers Actually Notice
Customers don’t always think, “This business has a restrictive lease.” Obviously not. They just notice that the space feels cramped, dated, confusing, noisy, cold, or hard to navigate. They notice what they don’t like; that’s what. Like, a parent with a stroller notices the awkward entrance, a client waiting for a private appointment notices there’s nowhere to sit, or even a shopper notices poor lighting makes everything look less appealing (or just eerie in general).
But you get the point here, and all of this is extremely uncomfortable, right? Clearly, here, that doesn’t mean every business needs some expensive redesign. But the space should help, not constantly make you compensate for it.
