Nobody gets a job to stay stuck at one level for eternity. Even if you love what you do, we humans crave change and advancement. And, in work, promotion provides the only real way to scratch that itch.
Unfortunately, the exact opposite ends up happening if you’re one of the many employees who find themselves passed over for promotion time and again.
Far from being empowering, continually missing out on promotion can see you doubting everything about your career. And that doubt can actually harm your performance over time. However, instead of falling apart, improving your prospects means acknowledging that something obviously needs to change. These three options could be a great starting point.
1. Expand Your Skill Set
The first question you should ask yourself is this – Do I actually have the skills to advance right now? Most of the time, an ongoing lack of promotion is a sure sign that you’re already maxing out your skillset in your current role. So, it figures that expanding your skill set is the first change you should consider making.
Of course, the challenge here is finding a way to achieve this goal without taking your foot off the work pedal. Part-time evening courses are one option, but an online doctorate degree, or some other form of remote learning could be an even better choice. This will allow you to learn at your own pace, directly alongside your current role. That way, you can ensure that your workload remains consistent, while your resume creeps to the top of the promotion pile for real.
2. Make Yourself More Visible
Skills probably aren’t the problem if people with fewer qualifications are being promoted before you. In this case, it’s worth considering whether perhaps those successful candidates are simply better at making themselves visible. After all, getting the work done well will only get you so far. You also need to put your head above the parapet for promotion.
Speaking out at meetings, volunteering for additional projects, and generally making sure that your face appears in the right places can all help here. This will ensure that your work receives fair recognition and that you instantly come to mind when your manager’s considering people for promotion.
3. Start Acting the Part
While you can’t presume anything pre-promotion, it doesn’t hurt to start exploring the role that’s up for grabs in advance. You should certainly get proactive by perhaps slipping a few of those new roles’ additional responsibilities into your workload already. Or, why not start asking around in that new department to see if you can help in any way?
This will all help to give you vital experience, while also proving that you’re fit for the role. And, if you’re already basically doing the job, then what manager in their right mind would choose someone else instead?
You have the power to bring promotion your way. Just make these simple changes today, and say hello to a brand new job tomorrow.
