Signs It Might Be Time to Consider Independent Living

Signs It Might Be Time to Consider Independent LivingAging comes at people in many different ways. For some, it’s the best time of their lives; they’re able to live their lives to the max once they retire and the world is their oyster. Others, however, aren’t as lucky, and as their age creeps up, so too do health ailments, and suddenly their world shrinks, and even the most simple, mundane things become more difficult.

And when you live alone as you get older, signs that things aren’t as easy as they once were will be even more apparent. It’s the small changes in your physical abilities or your memory that will be noticeable first. Then come the changes to how you live life and how you feel about your life as you notice the struggles building up. And this is where it becomes apparent that living alone might not be the best choice for you, and that moving to independent living is the right choice.

If you’re on the fence about considering independent living, here are some signs that now is the time to consider moving to an independent living community for a better quality of life.

Chores and Maintenance Become Too Much

When you live in your own home, be it one you own or rent, there is a long list of chores and tasks to maintain the upkeep you need to do on a near-constant basis. And if you’re struggling to manage these tasks or it’s becoming harder to stay on top of cleaning, cooking, laundry, etc., or you find you’re no longer able to change lightbulbs and care for your yard, for example, then now is the time to reassess your living situation before things become too unmanageable.

This is where considering options such as Independent Living becomes a compromise, so you get to still live in your apartment but with the backup of maintenance-free housing.

Social Isolation Is an Issue

Loneliness is one of the leading causes for concern in seniors across the world, and over time, it can feel like your world is getting smaller and you only have yourself for company.

No one needs to live this way, and removing loneliness from your life can boost your physical and mental health. Independent living communities, on the other hand, can be a valuable source of social activities for many residents. With people of a similar age living around you, a roster of classes and activities to keep you occupied, and a range of facilities from complex to complex, there is likely going to be something to keep you busy, even if it’s just sitting in a communal room reading while others mill about around you.

Safety and Accessibility Concerns Are Coming Up

If your mobility or memory is changing and you’re struggling to get up and down stairs or in the bath, then living alone can pose some serious concerns. You can, of course, add mobility aids to your home, but at some point, these might not be enough to help you, or your home might need more updates or modernization than it’s possible to carry out.

When you add in safety aspects, such as not locking doors or cooking and leaving appliances on, it’s not hard to see why living alone might not be right anymore.

Moving into a community where there is staff on hand to help you with aspects of living, like cooking or ensuring your home is locked and safe from strangers, can give you peace of mind that nothing untoward will happen to you.
