4 Therapies You Can Expect in Rehab

Therapies Expect in RehabWhile a small part of entering an addiction treatment facility is having a safe space to get clean, there’s far more to it than meets the eye. Some of the best rehab facilities also develop comprehensive therapeutic plans and deliver personalized care for a successful addiction recovery journey.

Therapy is a crucial part of addiction recovery as it aims to help clients eliminate destructive patterns and regain control of their lives. If you’re exploring rehab facilities and are curious about their therapeutic approaches, many of the best will ensure you have access to the following:

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

At all Banyan rehab centers and many other leading facilities, clients can participate in cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). CBT is a form of talk therapy designed to help people manage their problems and change how they think and act.

It’s structured, goal-oriented, and often used to treat a range of mental health conditions like depression, anxiety, and PTSD. In a rehab facility, CBT usually consists of journaling, relaxation techniques, and role-playing while providing clients with skills required to prevent relapse.

Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR)

Eye movement desensitization reprocessing, or EMDR for short, is a psychotherapeutic technique to address mental and physical responses to past traumatic experiences. Rehab facilities and therapists use this form of therapy to treat conditions like addiction, anxiety, trauma, and PTSD.

During an EMDR session, a therapist uses an auditory cue, tapping, or eye movements to mimic the brain’s processing of traumatic memories during sleep. While being treated, the client recalls the traumatic memory while engaging in eye movements, tapping, or other bilateral stimulation. The goal is to reduce the level of distress associated with the memory.

According to the American Psychological Association (APA), research supports EMDR therapy for treating trauma-related conditions. The World Health Organization and the Department of Veterans Affairs both recognize it for treating PTSD.

Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART)

Accelerated resolution therapy (ART) is an innovative form of therapy that combines psychotherapy with other techniques to address addiction, trauma, and anxiety. ART is derived from eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) and revolves around eye movements and visualization.

It involves clients using eye movements to create new images related to past trauma. However, it’s considered quicker and easier to learn than EMDR. Many clients prefer ART compared to other forms of therapy because it doesn’t require verbalizing trauma, so they don’t need to recount their traumatic experiences aloud.

Equine-Assisted Therapy

Not all forms of therapy have to involve talk therapy and reliving traumatic experiences. In many of the best rehab facilities, you’ll find equine-assisted therapy. While experimental, this form of treatment consists of working with horses in a structured therapeutic setting under the guidance of mental health professionals.

Clients care for, groom, and sometimes ride horses to learn about trust and awareness. This form of therapy is designed to engage the body and mind together. Potential benefits include improved emotional regulation, self-efficacy, and perceived self-esteem when suffering from substance abuse disorders.

It’s only natural to question the type of help you’ll receive in a rehabilitation facility. The forms of therapy above are just some of the many you may have access to as you start on your journey to sobriety.
