Taking Care of Your Hearing Aids

Taking Care of Your Hearing AidsAs with any technology, you need to do your best to take care of it so that it stays in a good condition for as long as possible. Hearing aids are a whole different type of technology that you really have to learn how to take care of properly. It’s not the same as an iPhone where you can just wipe down the screen and carry on with your day.

Hearing aids are medical technology and miniature, which means they are intricate pieces of equipment. You need to be able to use your best ability so that they can continue to support your hearing. Good quality hearing aids have a good life span of between three and seven years.

With good care, you can maximize how your hearing aids work and ensure that you won’t have to replace them too often.

So, with that in mind, let’s take a look at how you can take care of your hearing aids.

Keep them away from water.

Ideally, you don’t wear your hearing aids in the shower and you don’t put them next to the sink or the bath when you are washing your face or washing your hair. There are new hearing aids on the market that are waterproof and you can see if they really are waterproof before you buy them. If your hearing aids are not specifically waterproof, however, you need to keep them away from water so that they don’t get caught up or broken. Hearing aids have batteries, which means any water logging can prevent them from working, which is only going to serve you in a negative way.

Try to keep them away from sweat.

Hearing aids gather moisture quite easily inside their plastic shells, especially when you’re working out to music and sweating. You should dry your hearing aids out in an airy place with a charger or even a hearing aid dryer, which you can ask your audiologist about. If sweat does get into your hearing aid plastic case, open the battery drawer for better drying, but try not to rub them down with any type of cloth because fibers can get caught inside.

Keep them clean.

When you got your hearing aids, your hearing care professional would have walked you through the process of keeping them clean. Dirt can build up easily on hearing aids and that can block out the sound, hold any moisture and prevent them from functioning properly. They should be wiped with a dry cloth or a tissue regularly and you should remove any ear wax build up on the hearing aids that may have got caught.

Don’t wear them on the beach.

Did you know that salt crystals from the water can be left inside hearing aids? Sand can block the microphone ports, and sunscreen can contain chemicals that are damaging to the plastic casing. If your hands are full of sand or you have sunscreen being applied, avoid touching your hearing aids. You should also keep your hearing aids well away from salt water so that none of those salt crystals block it up.
