6 Reasons To Include Storytelling in Online Courses (Plus How)

Reasons To Include Storytelling in Online Courses (Plus How)Read on to learn the importance of storytelling in online courses and tips to become a better storyteller. If you’re an online educator looking to create courses that are engaging, memorable, and profitable, incorporating storytelling into your course design is a must.

Are you looking to create an online course that not only provides valuable information but also keeps your students engaged and invested?

Then you need to include storytelling in your course design.

As you might know, I am a bestselling personal development author with about 2 million books and courses sold globall and leading marketing influencer.

Plus I created a program to help entrepreneurs to make money online. It’s called Make Profitable Courses Without The Overwhelm.

As an online educator and a lifelong storyteller, I believe that storytelling is one of the most powerful tools at our disposal for engaging and inspiring our students.

In order to show you the power of story, here’s a personal example of the power of story… from my own life.

Below is the cliff notes version of a story I shared on both the sales page and inside of the course material for Make Profitable Courses.

My Personal Example of Storytelling:

When my son was born back in 2010, I found myself in a difficult position. I was struggling to balance my roles as a mother and a professional, and it was taking a toll on me. I was so exhausted from the “Mom Life,” that I started experiencing what I called “Momory Loss.” I was forgetting things almost as soon as I thought of them.

It was clear that the way I was living my life was not sustainable or emotionally healthy. I knew I needed to make a change. So I started researching how to create passive income from online courses. I am famously technophobic. But I pushed through my fears. And I discovered that there’s a lot of new software that makes creating and marketing online courses surprisingly easy.

So I taught myself everything I needed to know about creating and launching online courses and fueling them with the latest marketing methods. And the results were amazing. Today, I’m a leader in course creation and marketing, with over 2 million books and courses sold,

When I shared the longer version of the above story both on my sales page for Make Profitable Courses and inside the course itself…I received some very positive emails from people.

Examples of Positive Responses To My Storytelling

  • One person wrote, “Thanks Karen! I’m really impressed by your determination to overcome your technophobia. It makes me believe I can do it too.”
  • Another wrote, “It’s really empowering to see how much you can achieve with the right mindset.”
  • Plus another wrote, “I appreciate how open you were about your struggles. And I’m inspired by how your overcame them.”

The moral of the story about storytelling? It’s a powerful way to connect with people!

So, let’s get started and explore the many benefits of storytelling. Plus I will also be sharing some helpful tips on how to be a master storyteller.

6 Reasons To Use Storytelling in Online Courses

Coming up, I explore the many benefits of storytelling in online courses and provide practical tips on how to become better at storytelling.

Reason 1: Storytelling makes complex concepts more accessible

successful online coursesAs educators, one of our biggest challenges is to take complex, abstract concepts and make them accessible to our students.

It doesn’t matter if you’re teaching marketing, relationship tips, science, philosophy. etc…

Your number one goal is to help your students to understand and apply your insights in a way that feels clear, meaningful and do-able.

This is where storytelling comes in. By using stories to illustrate your ideas, you can make the concepts you share feel more concrete, simple, relatable and easy to apply.

For example…

  • If you’re teaching a science course and want to explain photosynthesis, you might use a story about a young plant struggling to survive in a dark, nutrient-poor environment. By telling this story, you can help your students understand how plants need light and nutrients to grow.

Reason 2: Storytelling creates emotional connections

Another reason why storytelling is so powerful is that it helps you to connect with people on a deeper level.

Plus by using anecdotes and relatable examples, you build trust and create a stronger bond

For example….

  • If you’re teaching a course on financial planning, you might share a personal story about how you overcame debt and built a successful savings plan. By sharing your personal experience, you can help your students connect with the material on an emotional level and feel inspired to take action.

Reason 3: Storytelling makes material more memorable

Storytelling in Online CoursesBy using stories and examples in your course, you make the information come to life and stick in your students’ minds. This makes it easier for them to recall what they learned, leading to better retention.

For example…

  • If you’re teaching a course on marketing, you might use case studies to illustrate the key principles of marketing. By presenting your students with real-world examples of successful marketing campaigns, you help them remember the material. Plus you help them to understand how to apply it in their own marketing.

Reason 4: Storytelling engages the senses

One of the challenges of online education is that we’re often working with limited sensory input. Unlike in-person classes, we can’t rely on visual cues or other sensory experiences. However, storytelling is one way that we can engage the senses and create a more immersive learning experience.

For example…

  • You might tell a story that includes vivid descriptions of sights, sounds, and smells. This can help your students imagine themselves in the scene and create a more vivid mental picture of your material.

Reason 5: Storytelling helps you stand out from the competition

tips on Storytelling in Online CoursesIn the world of online education, competition can be fierce.

With so many courses available on a wide range of topics, it can be challenging to make your course stand out.

However, incorporating storytelling into your course design can help you do just that.

When you weave stories and anecdotes into your lessons, you create a unique and memorable learning experience.

And THIS will set you apart from the competition.

For example…

  • If you’re teaching a course on cooking, you might include stories about the history and cultural significance of various ingredients and dishes. By doing so, you help your students develop a deeper appreciation for the food they’re preparing and create a more engaging and memorable learning experience.

Reason 6: Storytelling creates a sense of community

Finally, storytelling can also help create a sense of community among our students. By sharing stories, we can create a shared experience that helps bring our students together and foster a sense of camaraderie and connection.

For example…

  • You might ask your students to share their own stories related to the material you’re teaching, which can help them connect with each other and feel more invested in the learning process.

4 Tips to become a better storyteller

Now that we’ve covered some of the key reasons why storytelling is so important in online courses, let’s talk about how to become a better storyteller.

Tip 1: Start with a clear message

The first step to becoming a good storyteller is to start with a clear message. Before you start telling your story, think about the key takeaway that you want your students to get from it. This will help you stay focused and make sure that your story is relevant to the material you’re teaching.

Tip 2: Use vivid descriptions and sensory details

successful storytelling online coursesAs we discussed earlier, sensory details can be a powerful tool for engaging your students and creating a more immersive learning experience.

When you’re telling your story, try to include as many vivid descriptions and sensory details as possible.

This will help your students imagine themselves in the scene and create a more vivid mental picture of the material you’re teaching.

Tip 3: Keep it concise and to the point

When it comes to storytelling, less is often more. While it can be tempting to include every detail and subplot in your story, it’s important to remember that your goal is to illustrate a concept or idea, not to tell a long and winding tale. To keep your story concise and to the point, focus on the most important details and avoid getting bogged down in unnecessary tangents.

Tip 4: Practice, practice, practice

Finally, the key to becoming a good storyteller is to practice. Like any skill, storytelling takes time and effort to master. Take every opportunity you can to tell stories, whether it’s in your online course or in your personal life. Pay attention to how your audience responds and adjust your storytelling style accordingly. With time and practice, you’ll become a more confident and effective storyteller.
