How to Pick an Essay Topic: Advice from a Writing Expert

How to Pick an Essay TopicIf you want to know how to pick an essay topic, here’s some guidance from a writing expert for how to choose the best topic to make readers interested and/or earn high grades.

Research paper writing is a common assignment for students these days. In most cases, the students get the topics from their professor. But sometimes, they can choose it themselves. There is a list that the students can read to choose the essay topic they find the best. All the options suggested by the professor are worth paying attention to. But you should be aware how to pick an essay topic that could get you the highest grades.

You should be confident that…

  • the issue is interesting for you to work on
  • you have sufficient knowledge to cover it in the best way possible

The plus side of having a list to choose from…

  • you do not have to choose the topic all by yourself

But on the minus side…

  • you’ll still experience the stress of making a choice

Plus sometimes students might get the specifications from the professor, but the topic is missing. So, they have to study the instructions and then decide what issue their research will be devoted to.

This process of picking an essay topic gives you freedom – but can feel complicated.

  • Sometimes, the topic you choose requires you to write a hundred of pages.
  • Whereas sometimes the topic you pick winds up to only inspire a few paragraphs.
  • And so you want your topic not to be too broad nor too narrow.

No worries. I’m here to help.

As you might know, I started my career working in New York’s top ad and marketing agencies – rising up quickly to Senior VP.

But then I quit in my late twenties to pursue becoming a (hoped for) bestselling author.  Plus I wanted to help people – in a more personal way – as a branding and marketing consultant. Thankfully, my career plan/dream worked out! Now I help people with all kinds of writing projects.

With this in mind, I created this guide with how to pick an essay topic.

Plus if you need further guidance on how to choose an outstanding research or essay topic, you can explore various essay writers who also share lots of hints for you…including some below!

Consider the Required Essay Type

All university or college students know that some of the tasks to write can be tricky. You have also noticed that professors give different assignments on the basis of essay writing. The issues can be different as well as the types of essays, including persuasive, narrative, explanatory, compare and contrast, and others.

You should start writing your work only after you have learned everything about the characteristics of a particular essay type you need.

Do not forget about brainstorming

Brainstorming done in an appropriate manner is a stage that can guide you in your writing. You can collect a lot of ideas for your paper.

It is a simple process based on trying to find the answers to the following questions:

  1. Why is this topic suitable in my case?
  2. Which aspects of this subject do I find interesting?
  3. Is there a lot of literature on this issue available?

Select the topic that excites your interest

It is time to look at the ideas you have got after brainstorming and make a list of them. The order can be random as you will then tick the ones you like most and give more details new each of them.

Only your personal enthusiasm about the topic can make your readers engaged. It is impossible to make them interested if you are bored to death with your writing. It’s fine to choose a topic for an essay, checking the lists of free topics online.

Come up with one topic and analyze it thoroughly

Now you have an option to consider. Is it broad? Or is it narrow? If it is broad, you should give general information on the topic. Suppose the topic is Plants of Africa. It is a very broad topic as you cannot cover all of them. Your focus cannot be on some species only, so you have to give only some general facts about the vegetation on this continent.

If the topic is narrow, you get a clue about the main focus in your writing. The topic Vegetation in African Lowland Rainforest Area is specific. So, it is much easier for you to give a lot of details and analyze only these species in your writing.

Request for writing help

If you have spent hours thinking about possible topics and have not made any decision, you can ask your professor for help. You have chosen several variants but you cannot decide which one to choose. It is really complicated to figure out which of them can be perfect. It’s a serious matter as your grades are at stake. Still, there is no cause for your worries. There are professional writers who know how to pick an essay topic and work on it effectively. All you need to do is to hire one of them. An experienced writer can take up the best option for you and you may have some peace.

Use the same topic

You may have written some winning essay already. Well, you can reuse the same topic if you find it really exciting. The only thing you have to do is to find a different perspective for looking at the main issue. You have already composed a work on advantages of having gun license. Now you can approach the same topic with the focus on corresponding disadvantages. You should avoid copying and pasting any sentences. You’re the author of the previous paper, but you can be accused of self-plagiarism if you do. Remember: You will only get excellent grades if the paper is original.

Conclusion

An essay topic can be good for others but not suitable for you. What you should think about is a range of your personal preferences, interests, viewpoints, and opinions. If you have clear knowledge of what you have to write about, then it’s far easier to write an essay.  You should also keep in mind that even if you have collected plenty of ideas, you still have to organize them in a proper way.

Your professor grades your writing on the basis of many factors. Covering a lot of bright aspects from an unusual angle, you can add to the value of your essay. The most important aspect is to enjoy what you are doing! No boring topics! And no anxiety! The process of writing can be pure fun! Share your ideas with enthusiasm and engage your readers.
