Looking after your elderly parents can be a big responsibility. You’ll need to ensure that all their needs are met, while still juggling your other responsibilities. To help you offer the right support, these tips may come in handy.

I’m sharing about this topic today, because I’m the bestselling author of a health-boosting longevity book, Life is Long..

In my book I share about how to protect your health with research based health information.

I write a lot about science-backed tips and wellness strategies for living healthier, younger, longer. Plus I also share tips for living your later years at your happiest and best. With this in mind, in this particular I’ll be sharing ways you can support of your older parents.

5 Tips To Support Your Older Parents

1 . Identify what your parents need

If you are looking after your older parents you must understand what your parents need. Think about areas such as family support, medical needs, mobility, social needs, and home safety. When you understand the kind of support your parents need, it can be easier to create a support plan. If you have siblings, and a partner, ask them to help you create a care plan.

2. Consider your own lifestyle

When you’re planning to look after your elderly parents, you’ll need to consider your own lifestyle and your schedule. It can be helpful to ask yourself the following questions:

  • How much time can I dedicate to looking after my parents?
  • I provide the care that they require?
  • Do I need extra support to provide this care?
  • Am I living in close enough proximity to my parents?
  • Do my parents require in-house support?

3. Involve your parent

When your parents get older, they may not be able to do as much as they used to. Relying on others for support can be a little scary. Be mindful of your parent’s feelings, they may feel as though they are losing their independence. Make sure that you involve them in the process. When you are planning their care, ask them what their preferences are. Work together to find a solution.

4. Make adjustments to the home

To keep your parents safe at home, you may need to make a few adjustments like stairlifts for safety. For a few ideas to get started, consider these:

  • Install a stairlift: A stairlift can support your parents to use the stairs safely. These are a great option for people with mobility issues.
  • Bath lift: A bath lift can improve safety in the bathroom. There are many different types of bath lift available including battery-powered bath lifts. With small adjustments to the home, you can look after your aging parents better.
  • Walk-in showers and tubs: Replacing an existing shower or tub with a walk-in shower or walk-in bathtub is another, more extensive modification to consider.

5. Research care options

If you’ve decided that you need some support, you’ll need to start researching care options. Here are a few starting points:

  • In-home help: You might decide to hire at-home help for your parents. If your parents want to stay living at home, these types of caregivers are a great option.
  • Care home: Perhaps it’s not realistic for your parents to stay living at home? In this case, you might consider the option of a care home. Of course, you’ll need to properly talk this option through with your parents.

When you’re choosing a care home, it’s important to conduct detailed research. You’ll need to choose a high-standard facility, to ensure that your parents are well looked after. If you have a serious dispute with your parents’ care home, Rosenfeld Injury Lawyers can help. With plenty of ways to offer support, you can keep your parents healthy and happy.  If your parents aren’t yet at the point where they need 24/7 care, a doctor house call can address many routine medical needs. In-home physicians can diagnose medical conditions, administer routine vaccines, write prescriptions, perform lab tests, and more.
