Imposter Syndrome: What It Is And How to Stop It

imposter syndrome what it is and how to stop it

Imposter syndrome can be a major barrier to success, but with the right strategies, it’s possible to stop it and achieve even greater things. In this article, I’ll share tips and advice for stopping imposter syndrome in its tracks and boosting your confidence.

I want to talk about a topic that affects so many of us: imposter syndrome.

This term refers to a feeling of inadequacy or self-doubt, despite evidence of success or accomplishment. It’s that nagging voice in your head that tells you that you’re not good enough or that you don’t belong.

I know firsthand how debilitating imposter syndrome can be. I have wrestled with self doubts many times myself.

Quick funny story: I once had someone say to me: “You are a perfectionist.”

My reply: “No, I’m not. I’m not nearly a perfectionist enough.”

Translation: I can be very tough on myself – and I’ve been trying to work on that tendency.

I’m proud to say that the self-work is working. I’m now a recovered anxiety sufferer.

Plus I’m the author of a bestselling book with resiliency psychology techniques called The Bounce Back Ebook.

I’m committed to sharing insights and techniques which have helped me to be happier, stronger, more confident.

So I put together this article all about what imposter syndrome is, why it happens, and most importantly, how to stop it.

What Is Imposter Syndrome?

Imposter syndrome is a psychological phenomenon where people doubt their abilities and feel like a fraud. Despite external evidence of their competence, those experiencing imposter syndrome remain convinced that they are frauds. They believe they need to be perfect and they do not deserve success.

People with imposter syndrome often attribute their success to luck or to deceiving others into thinking they are more capable than they are.

Imposter syndrome can manifest itself in a number of ways. Some people feel like they don’t deserve their job or their success, while others worry that they will be exposed as a fraud if they ask for help. Still, others may avoid taking on new challenges for fear of failing and being “found out.”

Why Does Imposter Syndrome Happen?

confidence imposter syndromeImposter syndrome can happen for a variety of reasons. Some people develop it because of past experiences, such as being told they weren’t good enough or being compared unfavorably to others.

Others develop it because they feel like they don’t fit in or belong, which can be particularly common in minority groups.

Regardless of the reason, imposter syndrome can be incredibly damaging to your self-esteem and your career. It can hold you back from taking risks and pursuing opportunities that could help you grow and achieve even more success.

8 Tips to Stop Imposter Syndrome

Fortunately, there are strategies you can use to stop imposter syndrome in its tracks. Here are some tips that have worked for me and countless others.

1. Recognize That It’s A Normal Tendency & Greet It With Love

The first step in overcoming imposter syndrome is to recognize that it’s a common experience that many successful people have gone through. You’re not alone, and you’re not the first person to feel this way.

The second step is to practice mindfulness and become more aware of when you’re doubting your worth and abilities. Then replace your “inner critic” with your “inner best friend” – and talk more lovingly to yourself.

2. Reframe Your Thoughts

Instead of focusing on your perceived shortcomings, focus on your accomplishments and your strengths.

Write down a list of your achievements and remind yourself of them regularly. Remember that you deserve your success and that you have earned it through hard work and dedication.

3. Share Your Feelings

Another way to overcome imposter syndrome is to talk about it with others. Share your feelings with a trusted friend or mentor who can offer support and encouragement. You may be surprised to find that they have gone through similar experiences and can offer helpful advice.

Remember: It’s okay to feel like an imposter from time to time. It’s a natural part of the human experience. But don’t let those feelings hold you back from pursuing your dreams and achieving your goals.

4. Challenge your negative beliefs

healing and recovering from low self worthImposter syndrome is often fueled by negative self-beliefs.

To overcome it, you need to challenge these beliefs and replace them with more positive ones.

Try writing down some of your negative beliefs and then coming up with evidence that contradicts them.

For example…

If you believe that you’re not good enough for your job, write down some of your accomplishments to prove otherwise.

5. Visualize success

Visualization is a powerful psychological technique that can help you to overcome imposter syndrome. Take some time to visualize yourself succeeding in your career or personal life. Imagine yourself achieving your goals, receiving praise for your work, and feeling confident and proud of yourself. This can help to boost your confidence and overcome feelings of self-doubt.

6. Use positive affirmations

Affirmations are positive statements that you repeat to yourself to reinforce positive beliefs about yourself. They can be a powerful tool for overcoming imposter syndrome. Try coming up with a few affirmations that remind you of your strengths and capabilities, and repeat them to yourself each day. For example, “I am capable and competent,” or “I deserve to be where I am.”

7. Take Action

One of the best ways to stop imposter syndrome is to take action. Instead of avoiding new challenges, take them on and face your fears head-on. You may be surprised to find that you’re more capable than you thought. Remember that it’s okay to make mistakes, and that failure is a natural part of the learning process. Also keep in mind that sometimes you need to take small, steady changes to get the best results.
