It’s important to drink plenty of water – to keep your body hydrated and humming along! So if you’re gonna chug your eight 8-ounce glasses a day- should you chug cold water vs warm water?
The Quick Answer:
The majority of health professionals suggest warm water – for the reasons below. However, on a hot day or after a sweaty work out, they suggest cold water to readjust your body temperature more quickly.
Warm Water’s Health Benefits:
1. Cleanses your digestion- The majority of health professionals report that warm water is better for digestion than cold water. Research from the European Journal of Pharmaceutical and Medical Research reports that drinking cold water can make your blood vessels smaller and thereby restrict your ability to digest food at its best. Plus some studies definitely recommend people do not drink cold water during a meal because it can limit digestion.
2. Helpful With Constipation: According to Ayurvedic medicine, it’s good to start the day drinking warm water – because it’s believed to help stimulate bowel movements and aid constipation.
3. Helpful In Anti-Aging: As you probably already know toxins in the body can speed up the aging process. Drinking warm water is reported to help flush out toxins from your body – plus aids in repairing the skin cells that are affected by harmful free radicals. Plus drinking warm water is reported to be better at increasing blood flow to the skin. In fact various reports state that the hotter the liquid, the better the increased blood flow to the skin.
3. Decreases Stress Levels: According to a study published in the journal Psychopharmacology, drinking warm water helps improve the central nervous system – which can thereby help you to feel less anxious.
4. Alleviates Pain: According to Healthline, warm water is beneficial for cramps because it helps increase blood flow to the skin and also helps relax the cramp muscles. The warmer temperature is also reported to have a calming and soothing effect on the abdominal muscles, which can help provide instant relief for cramps and muscle spasms.
Cold Water’s Disadvantages
1. Some studies report drinking cold water actually decreases the function of the immune system. In particular, drinking cold water after a meal is reported to create excess mucus in your body, which is said to lead to a decrease in the immune system function.
2. Some studies state that when you drink cold water, your blood vessels shrink, your digestion becomes restricted, and hydration is hindered. Basically, when the water is very cold, your body becomes busy trying to expend energy to regulate your body temperature. As a result, this added function can wind up lowering the amount of hydration you receive.
