Does having a healthier office actually help employees? Well, it’s hard to answer that because it’s not just the office, it’s outside the office too, it’s the environment, the commute, the home, outside the home, well, as you know, germs are just everywhere. But one problem that businesses still have (yes, even after COVID) is having staff still just showing up to work sick.
Meaning, you can hire a cleaning company to wipe everything down and clean the floors, but it literally means nothing if staff still have to show up with a high temperature and coughing on everything. The body usually doesn’t care about being professional. It’s hard to even act professional when the nose is just leaking. Besides, it’s just not productive to force sick people to work through it
The Workday Gets Weird When Your Head Feels Full
Well, in all honesty here, a lot of jobs ask for more focus than people give them credit for. Even a normal email needs judgment. Like, you might need to read through it a few times. Another example would be the fact that a client reply needs tone, a meeting needs listening, a spreadsheet needs enough brainpower to not put the wrong number in the wrong box, and create a small financial mystery for later.
Okay, so now, just go ahead and add congestion, ear pain, pressure, poor sleep, or that heavy-headed feeling that makes everything feel slightly delayed. Someone dealing with ear infections and sinus pressure may technically be at work, but the actual working part can feel like trying to think through a wall. Really, it’s just too much.
Think About Your Hearing
Have you ever dealt with ear infections and sinus pressure combined? Well, if you have, not only does it feel like your head is about to explode, but you’re just struggling to hear. So imagine going into a meeting, imagine a one-on-one conversation, just imagine having to be in a phone call, it’s brutal! So, your head is probably hurting, you’re struggling to hear, your patience is thin, it’s just not a good combination.
So there’s bound to be mistakes, there’s bound to be a “can you repeat that”, there’s bound to be a high volume of talking, interrupting, and just a lack of professionalism. Again, it’s hard to be professional when you’re feeling sick. Sometimes the call can move. Sometimes it can become an email. Sometimes the update can wait until the afternoon. The professional world will often survive one rescheduled conversation, even if the calendar acts like it won’t.
Nope, Half-Resting Usually Helps Nobody
Absolutely no one here. But really, this is the trap. Working through it can feel responsible, but the work turns strange, and the rest never really happens. So now the person is too sick to work well and too busy to recover properly.
Plus, you’re not really that productive either, because you’re rereading everything multiple times (and it really doesn’t help that small tasks seem to take forever, too). Seriously, it’s not practical, and both employers (especially them) and employees really need to understand this. Basically, the cost of trying to work through it is just the fact that you’re not getting much done, and you’re not resting, therefore, you’ll just stay sick for longer.
