Most people start thinking about solar panels when the sun comes out. That makes sense on the surface, but it can actually work against you. The timing of your installation won’t change how well the panels perform, but it will affect how long you wait and how ready your system is for the months that matter most. Below, we’ll cover how each season stacks up and why the quieter months might be your best bet.
This is the biggest myth that holds people back. The short answer is yes, and the data backs it up. The UK generated over 18,000 GWh of solar electricity in 2025, with meaningful output recorded in every single calendar month. That includes December and January.
Solar panels don’t need blazing sunshine. They need daylight. Even on a grey, overcast day in February, your panels will still produce electricity. Output will be lower than in July, of course, but it doesn’t drop to zero. And here’s something most people don’t realise: panels actually run more efficiently in cooler temperatures. Silicon cells lose a small amount of efficiency as they heat up, so a cold, bright winter day can produce surprisingly good results.
Your system will still be generating during the colder months. It’ll contribute to your energy usage and help bring your bills down, even if the bulk of generation happens between April and September.
This is where timing really makes a difference. Demand for solar installations spikes between March and July every year. That’s when most homeowners start enquiring, and installers’ calendars fill up fast. During peak season, you can face wait times of several weeks just to get a survey booked, and then another few weeks before anyone’s on your roof.
Spring 2025 was a good example. Quarterly MCS-certified installations hit 57,000 in Q1 alone, the strongest first quarter since 2012. Booking during these busy months often means less flexibility on dates, longer lead times for grid approval and a later commissioning date. If you’re starting the process in May or June, your system might not be live until late summer, which means you’ll have already missed the highest-output months.
There’s also the practical side. Installers working through peak demand have tighter schedules and less room to accommodate specific requests. If you want a particular brand of panel or battery, or you need scaffolding coordinated around a tricky roof, the quieter months will give your installer more time to get it right.
If you book your solar panel installation in autumn or winter, you can skip the queue that typically builds from March onwards. Lead times are shorter, surveys are quicker to arrange and you’ll usually get more flexibility on dates.
The real benefit, though, is timing. A system installed in January or February will be fully commissioned and generating by the time the clocks go forward. That means you’ll catch the full spring and summer output window, which is when your panels will produce the most electricity. Homeowners who wait until summer to enquire often don’t get their system live until September or October, by which point daylight hours are already shrinking.
There’s also less competition for grid approval during the winter months. Your installer needs to notify your Distribution Network Operator (DNO) before connecting the system, and during quieter periods, this process tends to move faster. For larger systems that require full G99 approval, avoiding peak season can shave weeks off the timeline.
There’s no single perfect month to get solar panels fitted. The panels themselves don’t care whether they’re bolted on in November or June. But the practical side of the process, from booking a survey to getting grid approval, runs a lot smoother outside of peak season.
If you’re serious about going solar, the smartest move is to start the process during the quieter months. You’ll get shorter wait times, more attention from your installer, and your system will be up and running before the best generation months arrive. That’s a better outcome than rushing to book in May and spending the summer waiting.
