If you want to assess a used car’s value before buying it, it’s typically a smart idea. By doing so, you can tell whether it’s being offered at a fair price. You can also get some idea of how much trade-in value you can get for your own used car this way.
Before looking at used cars, Waco, TX residents, you should know what this value assessment process looks like. Let’s take a moment to talk about the various steps that will go into it.
Look at the Car’s Brand
First, you’ll want to consider what brand the car is. There are some vehicles that have more intrinsic value in the eyes of the car-buying public, and others that have less.
For instance, the Toyota or Camry brands are typically among those that retain their value the best. Teslas, Jaguars, and Lincolns are among those that generally go in the other direction.
Look at What Year the Car Is
The car’s year is what you will want to look at next. It stands to reason that a car that’s 10 years old is worth less than one that is five years old.
Look at How Many Miles Are On It
The number of miles is what you should consider next. If you’re looking at a vehicle that has 50K miles on it, then it should be worth more in most cases than one that has twice that many.
The natural wear and tear on a car over time becomes more of a factor with vehicles that have been driven more.
Consider Whether It Has Ever Been in an Accident
You can next look at a service like Carfax to determine whether the vehicle has ever been in an accident. If a vehicle has been involved in no crashes, it’s worth more. If it has been in one accident, or more than one, you can naturally mark its value down.
Generally, the number of accidents is commensurate with the vehicle’s value, even if the crash was considered relatively minor.
Look at the Trim Level
The trim level also makes a difference when determining a used car’s value. If you have a higher trim level, a vehicle is often worth more.
However, don’t confuse aftermarket customizations with a car’s trim level. In some instances, a car that has been heavily modified after purchase will actually make the vehicle worth less. That depends to some degree on what alterations were made.
Look at Reputable Websites
If you know a great deal about cars, you will probably be able to come up with a ballpark estimate of the vehicle’s worth based on the five factors we’ve just described. It’s often helpful to input all of these factors into a tool like Kelley Blue Book’s car assessment tool to get an even more accurate idea, though. You might also use Edmunds, which has a similar way of assessing a vehicle’s value.
It is through this process that you can determine a used car’s approximate worth.
