If you’re sexually active, and you want to look into various forms of birth control, you’ll probably notice some pros and cons that go with each one. There’s not usually a form of birth control that a user would consider perfect. However, some make more sense in some situations and less in others.
For instance, some women like to use Mirena. It’s a device that’s inserted into the body that releases hormones that work to stop pregnancy. It’s not 100% effective, but it does have a very high efficacy rate.
However, some women experience something called the Mirena Crash if they remove the device. A Mirena Crash can negatively impact the former user to the point where they’re utterly miserable for a time. They might experience heavier-than-normal menstrual flow, headaches, mood swings, and more.
Since some women who might have used Mirena will no longer consider that option because of the possibility of the crash that we are describing, it makes sense for sexually active individuals to look at other options. We’ll discuss a few right now, and we’ll also mention some negatives and positives that go with each one.
Abstinence
If you don’t want to get pregnant, and if you don’t want to get anyone else pregnant, then you can always practice abstinence. Some religions recommend it, at least until such time as you marry someone. Some schools teach children to refrain from sexual activity as well.
It’s true that if you don’t have sex, then presumably, you don’t have to worry about pregnancy, not to mention any of the various sexually transmitted diseases that exist. However, if you want to have sexual contact with someone you care about, then this method won’t allow you to do that.
Many studies have shown that teaching kids to abstain from sex doesn’t work. They have hormones and natural urges, and these ramp up during adolescence.
If you’re older, and you abstain from sex, then it’s true that might work for you if you have a relatively low sex drive. If you feel a strong urge to seek out physical intimacy with someone, though, then you probably won’t look at this possibility very seriously.
Condoms
You might also use condoms. They have been around for decades, and that’s because they have a solid track record.
They’re also one of the more easily accessible forms of birth control. You can usually walk into any pharmacy and buy them. They don’t tend to cost very much, either.
You can get them in different sizes and with various features. All of this might lead some couples or individuals to seek out and procure this form of birth control more than some of the others on this list.
However, condoms do not always work. When they don’t, you can often point to human error as the cause.
It’s also possible that a condom might break or that you’ll get a defective one. That means pregnancy could result from a night of passion, or you could also contract an STD.
Condoms, while they are among the cheapest forms of birth control and the easiest to obtain, do not always have the best reputation. Many individuals either ended up pregnant or impregnate someone due to a condom-related error, whether they caused that error or a faulty product did.
Birth Control Pills
You can also use birth control pills. These pills, much like the other options on this list, have been around for many decades.
They have one of the best track records of any of the options on this list. Like just about anything else, they do not have a 100% accuracy rate, but they do the job the overwhelming majority of the time.
If a woman uses them, then she has a miniscule chance of getting pregnant. She can then have unprotected sex, though that does leave her open to STDs. That is why, if a woman on birth control has multiple partners, it’s often advisable that she have those partners use condoms as well.
Birth control pills also help some women who have difficult or painful periods. Some of them can make menstruation easier to tolerate.
On the negative side, getting them sometimes proves difficult. Some doctors, even in the present day, will not give them to a woman if she’s not married. The doctor might protest for religious reasons.
If a woman can find a doctor who will give them birth control, they also need to pay for it. Most forms of birth control pills don’t cost an exorbitant amount, but they’re still more expensive than some of the other options on this list.
Also, some women have a hard time getting their health insurance to pay for birth control pills. If that’s the case, then they may have to pay for them out of pocket.
Pulling Out Before Ejaculation
Some couples engage in intercourse, but then they have the man pull out before ejaculation. This probably remains one of the worst methods of attempting to prevent pregnancy.
It might work, but it’s sometimes possible for a man to impregnate a woman through vaginal sex even without ejaculating. Also, even if both partners have the best of intentions, accidents happen this way.
Sterilization
Both men and woman can also elect to sterilize themselves. Most individuals in the medical community feel that a man getting a vasectomy represents the easier of these two options. The man can do it in a single afternoon at a doctor’s office in most instances, and he’ll normally experience few or no negative side effects.
He can go back to being sexually active after a couple of weeks of healing. If a woman wants to undergo sterilization, it’s a little more difficult and costly, but it’s fairly safe. Medical science has basically mastered the procedure.
Both options will cost more upfront, but once the man or woman goes through with it, they can engage in unprotected sex with their partner.
