There are a lot of misconceptions about the fitness world. The idea that you need to commit to a full length fitness routine to see any benefit, for a start, is a complete fabrication. Something is always better than nothing, and that’s key to keep in mind when you’re finding it hard to commit to your exercise needs.
That being said, if you would like to create a fitness routine to suit you, it’s best to have an inside scoop on what is essential and what isn’t. After all, you could very well set yourself off on the wrong foot by subscribing to a fitness theory that’s only really holding you back!
With that in mind, here are some of the most common things people get wrong about creating and following a fitness routine.
Making No Time for Stretching
Stretching is always required! It helps your muscles stay in the right shape they need to be, and will help to keep aches and cramps at bay. You need to stretch before you work out and afterwards as well, and it’s good to try and incorporate a stretching half hour into your life around twice a week too.
Stretching keeps you feeling supple and flexible, and helps muscles to stay strong and usable in your down periods. If you haven’t been to the gym in a while, take 10 minutes now to work on your different muscle groups with targeted stretches for each.
You may even want to consider taking up Yoga, which can easily be done at home by following some tutorials and guided meditations on Youtube.
You Don’t Need to Think About Your Diet
If you’re exercising, you’re working off the calories, right? And that means you can eat whatever you like in whatever amount! The reality doesn’t quite align with that, however.
What you put into your body will determine how you feel and what you can do. If you’re not feeding your body in the right way, it’s going to show up in how tired you are, how ‘moody’ you may be, and how long you can go for down the gym.
Plus, you need to eat the right food groups in the right amounts to ensure your muscles are getting what they need to stay strong and pain free. It’s why you’ll see protein supplements in bulk at any health and wellness store you step into!
Focusing on Too Many Goals at Once
You may think that you can squeeze as many fitness goals as you like into one fitness routine, but that overcomplicates things.
Indeed, many people want to exercise more often thanks to the amazing mental health benefits. People tend to feel great after they’ve hit the gym, and that can really set the tone for the day.
But say you want to lose weight as well. Either focus on solely building a routine that will allow you to do that, combined with a healthy diet that will support you, or leave this to focus on at a later time.
After all, you could boost these efforts with weight loss injections, but those won’t bring the same kind of immediate benefit on the way you feel as an hour in the gym can. If weight loss matters to you, it needs to be the sole goal.
They Only Need to Commit for a Short Period of Time
We said above that something is better than nothing, and that’s true. But if you want to use a fitness routine to stay in shape over time, rather than for a short term gain or a temporary transformation, you’ll need to stick it out.
A lot of people get fired up to hit the gym, but over the course of the next month or so, their passion for it slowly dwindles down to nothing. That’s also when unhealthy habits tend to rear their heads, and you may find your diet and sleep habits falling to the wayside too.
Many don’t even notice that this is happening, and are left wondering why they’re not seeing the results they really want. And it’s because they’re not putting in as much as they really need to.
