As we age, our skin tends to lose firmness and elasticity. Genetics, significant weight loss and gain, and other factors can come into play here as well. Though these changes can affect virtually any part of the body, the skin of our upper arms is often among the most affected. Exercise typically does little to help reduce the resulting sagging. For many people, plastic surgery can make a world of difference.
An upper arm lift, also known as a brachioplasty, entails removing excess skin and fat. In doing so, it reshapes the upper arms, making them firmer and more contoured. Not all brachioplasties are the same, though. Different surgeries are designed to target different issues, and being sure to work with best reviewed plastic surgeon Dr Cengizhan is the key to ensuring the procedure is safe and successful. Consider three of the main types of brachioplasties to help determine which one might be best for you.
Mini Arm Lifts
A mini arm lift, also known as a limited incision brachioplasty, is designed for people with mild to moderate sagging. It’s often the best choice if loose skin is mainly near the armpit. During a mini arm lift, surgeons make a small incision in the area where the skin sags. Then, they trim the excess skin and tighten the remaining tissue to make it firmer and smoother. Since the incision is small, scarring is minimal and easily hidden in the natural fold of the underarm.
Recovery is usually quicker with a mini arm lift than with a more extensive one. Most patients can return to light activities within a couple of weeks after the procedure. This type of arm lift is often a nice option if your skin still has most of its elasticity, and you just need subtle changes in the tone and contour of your upper arms.
Traditional Arm Lift
For people with moderate to significant sagging and excess skin, a traditional arm lift is typically the best option. This procedure targets the skin from the armpit down to the elbow. During a traditional arm lift, the surgeon makes an incision along the inner or back side of the upper arm. Excess skin is removed, and the remaining skin is tightened. Liposuction may also be performed to remove fat deposits and improve contouring.
A traditional arm lift is a bit more invasive than a mini arm lift, and it may leave behind a more noticeable scar. Still, it produces more dramatic results, and the scar usually fades a great deal over time. Recovery times for traditional arm lifts are roughly the same as those for mini arm lifts.
Extended Arm Lifts
Extended arm lifts are the most in-depth brachioplasties. They’re recommended for people who have lost a great deal of weight and have significant sagging skin as a result. This procedure can extend beyond the upper arm to the sides of the chest and torso. As such, it creates more natural contours. Extended arm lifts may require more recovery time and leave behind more scarring, but they can make a major difference in people’s appearances and the way they feel about themselves.
Choosing the Right Arm Lift Procedure for You
Each of these arm lifts targets specific issues and has its own range of benefits. Not all of them are right for everyone, though. During a consultation with a plastic surgeon, the doctor will evaluate your skin elasticity, where the excess skin and fat are, and the results you’re hoping to achieve to help determine which of these procedures would be best for you.
