What To Do When Your Hearing Aids Stop Working

What To Do When Your Hearing Aids Stop WorkingFor many people, the journey to better hearing begins with tiny warning signs: Missing parts of conversations, having to turn up the TV, or constantly asking people to repeat themselves. These are often the early warning signs of hearing loss. Naturally, you can look for hearing assistance from some of your favorite apps. Live captions and sound alerts can make your life more comfortable.

But turning to hearing aids that can literally transform everyday life. But what happens if your hearing aids suddenly stop working or the sound just isn’t right?

The fitting might not be right for you

When you first start using hearing aids, it can take time to get everything just so – each pair has different adjustable settings that control the volume, the tone, and where you’re picking up the sound from. If your hearing still feels a bit muffled or uncomfortable, the settings might need a tweak.

A visit to a professional hearing aid center will get your devices calibrated just for you.

The battery might be running out

One of the most common reasons a hearing aid stops working is a flat battery.

Most devices will give you a gentle nudge with a beep or a tone to let you know it’s running low. Rechargeable ones need a regular top-up. If you’ve got the disposable type, you might need to swap the battery out every few days or weeks, depending on how much you use them.

There might be something stuck inside

Hearing aids have loads of teeny tiny openings that can get clogged up with dust, earwax, or moisture. This can mess with the sound and sometimes even block it out altogether.

Start by giving the bits you can see a quick wipe with a soft dry cloth.

Some hearing aids come with a tiny brush for this sort of thing. Just be careful not to use any water or cleaning sprays, as these can kill the electronics.

If you’re still having trouble, take your hearing aids to a specialist and they can give them a good clean.

An internal part might be damaged

Like any gadget, hearing aids have delicate bits inside that can break if you drop them, get them wet, or have had them for too long.

If your hearing aids are no longer working, it’s probably because of an internal problem. Don’t even think about trying to open them up or fix them yourself. Head to the store or clinic where you got them, and they can take a look.

You might have messed up the app

Lots of modern hearing aids come with apps that let you tweak the settings for different situations.

Sometimes, a careless tap or swipe can change something important without you even realizing it.

If you notice the sound has gone all wonky after using the app, try resetting it to default or have a look at the support page to see if you can figure out what went wrong. If you’re still stuck, bring your phone and hearing aids to your provider, and they can show you the ropes.

Hearing aids are meant to make your life easier, not more stressful. Most problems have easy solutions, and with a bit of TLC and the support of a trusted specialist, you can keep your hearing aids and your confidence working just fine every day.
