Do’s and Don’t’s of Choosing a Wedding Photographer

Do's and Don't's of Choosing a Wedding Photographer When it comes to planning your wedding, there are many decisions you’re going to have to make. One of these decisions is going to be who will be your wedding photographer.

I’m writing about this topic because I’m the founder of bestselling relationship program – called The Secrets of Happy Couples Online Course – which is couples therapist recommended.

Choosing a wedding photographer is an important part of the wedding planning process, so you need to be sure that the person that you choose is going to be the right person to capture your day.

Understanding the different wedding photography styles is going to get you started, but understanding whether you want candid style photography or a set of documentary style wedding photos is important. It’s going to be with you for hopefully the rest of your life and you want to be able to look back on those wedding photos with a smile on your face.

Do’s & Don’t’s for Picking Wedding Photographers

In this article, we’re going to cover the do’s and don’ts of choosing a wedding photographer so that you can make the right decision.

1. Do talk to them face to face.

When it comes to hiring a wedding photographer, try not to organize everything over the Internet. You will spend a lot of time with your photographers on your actual wedding day, so you need to make sure that you find somebody that you like and that you vibe with. You need to feel comfortable with the person that you hire to take your wedding pictures because then they’re going to care more about how your pictures look.

2. Do not book anybody without meeting them in person.

Going off the previous point, you don’t want to choose somebody to do your wedding photos if you’ve never met them before. There are horror stories out there on the Internet and you don’t want to have a photographer that bosses your people around. You also don’t want somebody unprofessional and that you can’t rely on to turn up on your big day. The actual photographer that you have on your big day should be somebody that you recognise when they turn up.

3. Do discuss expectations.

What are the turn around times for when it comes to a photographer? The last thing that you want is to have your wedding shot and then have to wait six months for the actual photos to arrive. You want to be able to book a date for the preview of the photographs and then book a time for your wedding album to be completed. A wedding photographer should be able to.you this from the get go.

4. Do not assume that you won’t care.

Wedding photography styles really do matter. You want to have a style of photos that is Evergreen and reflects who you are as a couple. A lot of people will say that they don’t care what type of style they get for their wedding day, but you will care when it comes down to it and when you do the preview. In the same breath, you need to consider that you will absolutely care how long you’re going to have to wait for your photos, because it can feel very unprofessional to wait months and months and months for it.

5. Do ask to see examples of their work.

You don’t just want to see pictures of after the wedding ceremony, you want to see pictures of during the getting ready times and the wedding breakfast as well. You need to be able to witness a full wedding album so that you can make an informed decision on the wedding photographer of your choice. Check that the photographer has captured the personality as well as the unexpected moments of other weddings.

6. Don’t just look at portraits.

A lot of photographer portfolios are packed with wedding portraits, but you want to be able to choose from a range of styles. Take a look at those documentary style wedding photos and take a look at the candids as well. You need to know that the photographer that you pick is going to be able to capture exactly what you want from the beginning of the day to the end of the day.

7. Do look for a creative photographer.

It can be hard to spot a difference between a photographer’s work from one to the next. You want to find a photographer that can see things differently to others and will be willing to do what it takes to get the good shot. You want to think about interesting lighting or how they could use any negative weather to their advantage in the photos. It can tell you a lot about how comfortable couples and families are with a photographer based on how much technical knowledge that they have.
