4 Key Signs of Autism in Young Children

Read on to get more insight into whether autism could be a factor in your child’s behavior.

1. Lack of Eye Contact

As an infant, your baby should show interest in eye contact with you. If you’re always struggling to catch their eye, then it might be an early warning sign.

Keep in mind, though, that a lack of eye contact could mean many things depending on the environment.

2. Aggressive Melt Downs

Has your youngster ever become so inconsolable that they became violent? Have they ever harmed themselves while melting down? Often, these ‘episodes’ get mistaken for temper tantrums.

They are not.

About 20% of young children with autism exhibit signs of aggression. This behavior rises above the level of a normal tantrum. It increases stress, decreases everyone’s quality of life, and isolates the child.

These breakdowns can look like biting, hitting, smashing, or self-harming. It’s also very difficult to calm down a child in the middle of these breakdowns.

It’s also usually in response to a trigger.

When parenting a child with autism, it’s important to identify your child’s triggers. One of the biggest triggers, especially for youngsters, is a communication breakdown.

It can be hard to identify this trigger, though. That’s because difficulty communicating is one of the top autism signs.

3. Difficulty Communicating

Living with autism means learning how to communicate the right way with your child. Autism signs around communication include:

  • Not responding to their name
  • Lack of pointing or interest in communicating
  • Not understanding social or emotional cues
  • Lack of early adoption of words and sounds

This is a top challenge for parents and children. If you need help with this symptom, consider looking into a local ABA therapy center for help.

Remember, things will get better as your child gets older. As they develop language and emotional skills, they can thrive.

4. Stranger Danger

Early “stranger danger” behavior is common in all types of autism. Your youngster might run away when company comes over or hide from guests.

This behavior will go beyond a “shy” temperament. For instance, a toddler might pretend to fall asleep until a stranger leaves the room. That’s not typical behavior.
