Common Causes of Kid Injuries
As an adult, you’re probably getting yourself all worked up when you’re tasked to take care of a kid. They’re far too sensitive, physically and emotionally. So, it’s up to you to keep them safe. But with how big the world is, you might get in trouble with doing that because of problems such as:
- Bites
- Burns
- Cuts
- Falls
- Tripping over
- Object impact, and
- Vehicle accident
As you can see, many of these causes are purely accidental. After all, your kid’s still developing in some places, so they’re awkward at times. But instead of scolding them for it, assure them it’s normal to be uncoordinated, so this kind of accident won’t leave too much damage to their self-confidence. However, be it accidental or not, you need to know how to treat them once you see them get hurt.
How To Treat Kid Injuries
Any child screaming in pain is a heart-stopping moment. And once you find out that kid’s yours, you might find yourself fighting tooth and nail only to get to them. But it’s normal for you to freeze up as soon as you see your child all banged up on the floor. So, here’s what you need to do:
Know The Basics
Since you’re in charge of these children, they’ll look to you when something comes up. If they get hurt, your presence is important now more than anything. Getting hurt is a part of growth. However, if their injury reaches a point where they need to consult with https://easyalliedhealth.ca/ and other physical therapy sites, that’s when you draw a line.
Learning basic first aid procedures could lower their risk, though. Even something as simple as knowing how to bandage and disinfect a wound properly can change the tides in your favor. Of course, depending on their age, different procedures must be done to alleviate the issue.
Fortunately, many resources are available right at your fingertips. You can enroll in classes for hands-on learning with a professional, or you could utilize the internet and watch professional training videos there instead. Whatever medium you use, as long as you learned all of it by heart, you can be a big help for the kid.
Stay Calm
As mentioned earlier, it’s normal to freeze up once you see your child crying or sprawled out on the floor in front of you. However, your freaking out won’t help them at all. If anything, they might get terrified the longer you stay panicking.
Although it’s hard, you need to stay calm in this situation. Whether they’re a teenager or a toddler, they’ll look to you when they’re in trouble because, between the two of you, you’re the one with more experience. So, it makes sense for them to go to you for help.
Tell them to take deep, measured breaths to calm down if they can. Take the lead for them to focus and follow you. This way, you can both settle down at the same time.
But if they’re unconscious, you need to take a deep breath and focus on helping them as much as you can. Once you’ve performed the appropriate first aid measure, call 911. Remaining calm in this situation will help you relay it better. Only after the child’s secured by professionals can you allow yourself to let out your anxieties.
Offer Their Favorite Thing
If the child’s still conscious, try giving them their favorite object. Seeing (and holding) something familiar can comfort them while applying the appropriate first aid procedure. And since they’re comfortable, them flailing around while you disinfect their wounds or press a cold compress on their bruises could lower considerably.
On the other hand, make sure they have their favorite thing while they’re asleep, especially when rushed to a hospital. Just like earlier, waking up to something familiar will help ease their anxieties in a new environment if that’s their first time in a hospital. Therefore, lessening the possibility for them to break into a tantrum.
You need to understand that this is a highly stressful situation. Even though you’re the adult and you’re traumatized witnessing the entire thing, your child is much more affected by this than you are. So, make them comfortable as much as you can. By handing them their favorite object, you’re already on your way there.
Explain The Process (thru song or w/e)
It’s a hard pill to swallow, but you won’t be there for them every waking second of their lives. Unless you lock them in the house, it’s nearly impossible for you to protect them from everything. But there’s one thing you can do, and that’s to pass down your knowledge.
Teaching them how to treat minor injuries like scrapes and bruises is a must, especially if you’re a busy person. By knowing how to do this, they could somewhat practice independence in this regard.
Of course, children vary in age. As a result, while teenagers can remember your step-by-step procedure, toddlers are unlikely to do that. Children want everything to be fun, so try disguising what you’re teaching them. Since most children like music, use this to your advantage by singing a catchy song with the steps as lyrics. Once they’ve performed it flawlessly, reward them for an excellent job.
The Bottom-line on Ways to Treat Kid Injuries
Watching over children is both rewarding and panic-inducing at the same time. Some people find their cluelessness and awkward nature endearing. Meanwhile, on the opposite end, many would get themselves all worked up because of how much there is that can hurt the child. So, as an adult, it’s up to you to find ways to treat their injuries.
