Happy New Year, Happy New YouIt’s almost January 1st so you might be wondering how to prepare for the new year and create resolutions that lead to a happier future!

It doesn’t matter if you always like to have a plan for what the next 12 months will bring.

Or if you’re thinking more seriously about the future for the first time this year.

Either way, I want to help you to make sure you are prepared for the new year, so you can hit the ground running with your greatest energy and focus!

As you might know, I’m a bestselling author and happiness researcher. I wrote a book called Happy Habits.

In my research, I learned a lot about how to make sure you stick to your New Years Resolutions – by embracing specific principle of “habit formation.”

A lot of times new year’s resolutions fail – because you never really create a clear plan. You simply have a vague hope that the new year will be better than the last year.

I want you to start strong and keep the momentum going longer.

With this in mind…

Read on to find out just how to prepare for the new year so you can make it a happy and productive one.  

1.  List Your Accomplishments 

new years resolutionsAlthough it’s easier to look to the next year and write a list of all the things you want to achieve than look back and think of all the things you did achieve, it is this latter idea rather than the former that you need to start with. 

By creating a list of all your accomplishments throughout the year, you can see how far you’ve come.

And this will help to spur you on – since you know that you can do things when you put your mind to them.

Even if it feels as though you did very little, if you dig deep enough there will always be something you can find that you were proud of.

Use this as the starting point for building a better new year. 

2. Life Lessons 

prepare lessons learnedWhile you’re thinking about the achievements you accomplished this year, you can also think about the life lessons you learned.

What was most important and what can you use to help you get prepared for the year ahead? It might be that you learned how important family is, and how little possessions really matter.

Perhaps you’ve realized that your career isn’t getting you where you want to be. And you want to change to do something more worthwhile.

Whatever it is you’ve learned, this can be the start of your plan for next year. These are the things you want to achieve, and combined with everything you already achieved, it should be perfectly possible to do just as well next year as you did this year – perhaps even more so as you’re preparing this time.  

3. Start With Appointments

Whatever it is, if an appointment is necessary, make that appointment before the end of December so that you can start the new year tying up loose ends and making forward strides.

Whether it’s a personal appointment such as seeing a dentist or a financial advisor.

Maybe you need to talk to someone about something around yourself house.

 For example, you might want to book an appointment with an electrician to fix an appliance or an interior designer about decorating a room. With all this in mind, start booking these appointments as soon as you can. You’ll begin the year feeling highly empowered!


simplify quote karen salmansohnAlthough the new year isn’t springtime, it’s still a good idea to have a “spring clean,” or at least throw out anything that you no longer need and that is just getting in your way.

Thoroughly decluttering your home, getting rid of things – games, books, clothes, kitchen equipment, knickknacks, and more – will help you feel clearer in your mind, and will give you a more comfortable home to be in.

It’s amazing how quickly “things” can build up, and you’ll soon get used to the mess, especially if you’re busy.

Start the new year in the best way you can and clean up and clear out the mess. This way, you’ll be more prepared for the new year and your home will look great.
