“The Abominable Snowman,” by Valerie Sussman

The ambient temperature in my marriage

gradually went from hot

to warm

to lukewarm

to cool

to cold

to freezing.

I went from hand-picked

to nit-picked

to ice-picked.

From attraction

to coming un-attraction

to fatal unattraction.

I did not see it coming;

my basic instincts failed me

as I found myself left out in the cold.

ABOUT THE WRITER AND ARTIST: Dr. Valerie Sussman is a writer and healing artist. She’s presently working on a book called, “Diary of An Ex-Mad, Ex-Desperate, Ex-House-Wife.”  She’s a formerly-practicing Pediatrician who’s now getting known for making quirky, offbeat art in order to explore life’s challenges and conundrums. Her back story:  At the age of 50 she found herself facing the “Triple Threat.” Unfortunately, this did not include Singing, Dancing, and Acting—but the other (perhaps more common) “Triple Threat”: Midlife, Menopause, and … Divorce.  As a result, she began maniacally creating somewhat wacky pieces of art as a means of expressing her pain, fear, anger… and, yes, hope. She thus became a Healing Artist. You can find her at

 “The Abominable Snowman”: figurine from The Rudolph Company, Swarovski crystal snowflake, ice chest, ice pick, ice cubes, and thermometer, various dollhouse miniatures, miniature heart bead, pom poms, artificial snow and lots of resin.
